By the Commission’s decision, the prize was awarded to the laureate for exceptional long-term activity in the field of ethnic culture and the revival, nurturing and international recognition of the tradition of <a href="https://www.archyde.com/on-the-lauksnos-competition-get-to-know-unesco-protected-traditions-from-ukraine-to-mexico-tradition/" title="On the "Lauksnos" competition – get to know UNESCO-protected traditions from Ukraine to Mexico Tradition”>straw gardens.
M. Liugienė’s long-term activity in the field of ethnic culture is extremely significant for the development and dissemination of Lithuanian ethnic culture, the cultivation of national self-awareness, it has an educational and enduring value, and a strong impact on Lithuanian society.
First of all, M.Liugienė’s exceptional merits in the field of nurturing the tradition of straw gardens should be noted. 2015-2023 through her efforts, consistent work was carried out, preparing for the inclusion of this tradition in the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2023: trainings, publications, conferences were held. Before international recognition, the tradition of tying gardens was included in the Lithuanian intangible cultural heritage. During the preparation of the application to UNESCO, M.Liugienė participated in the working group and is one of the co-authors of the film “The tradition of straw gardens in Lithuania / Sodai Straw Garden Making in Lithuania”.
The folk artist passes on the accumulated knowledge by creatively conducting educational classes, seminars, organizing international conferences and camps that attract great interest. She has prepared publications, artistic documentary films about the symbolism of traditional Lithuanian straw gardens, technological processes of tying. Having raised a large community of gardeners, the folk artist formed the association “Dangaus sodai” – her activities prove that this tradition is alive throughout Lithuania and famous beyond its borders.
As a long-time employee of the Vilnius Ethnic Culture Center, M.Liugienė was distinguished by her creativity in implementing various projects both in the field of publishing (released 9 CDs, 5 films, 21 publications (books, calendars, handcraft sets)) and in organizing various events.
in 2010 Ms. Liugiene was awarded the title of Lithuanian folk artist and the status of an artist. She is a long-time member of the Union of Lithuanian Folk Artists and the Association of Folk Painters and Artists of the Vilnius Region.
After finishing her work at the Vilnius Ethnic Culture Center, M.Liugienė continues to actively participate in public life. As the head of the “Gardens of Heaven” association, she initiates various projects: in 2024 the artistic documentary film “Ka(l)bantys sodai” was created, and in 2025 an international plein air exhibition of gardeners “Garden snake” is planned.
