Can lions be kept at home?

In this regard, Deputy Director of Lahore Safari Park Ghulam Rasool while talking to Independent Urdu said that a NOC is required from the Deputy Commissioner to keep the tiger.

This section contains related reference points (Related Nodes field).

The Deputy Commissioner will forward the application to the Wildlife Department and the Deputy Director or Assistant Director of the concerned city will look into the application and go to the owner of the tiger to see if they have a suitable place to keep the bloodthirsty animal and If the place is in accordance with the rules and regulations, the Deputy Commissioner will send the application back to the Deputy Commissioner with his remarks to issue NOC to that person.’

He said that we have two types of people who keep tigers, one in the breeding farm category and the other as individual hobbyists. “If a person takes NOC of one, two or three lions to keep individual lions, there is no restriction that he cannot breed the lions.”

He further said that unfortunately many people have kept lions as a symbol of their emirate.

Ghulam Rasool was asked if anyone is going to ask those who advertise lions on social media. So he said that the wildlife department has checked such cases many times. “If any such complaint is received, action is taken.”

Where do lions come from?

In this regard, Ghulam Rasool said that the idea that people take lions from safari parks or zoos is wrong. “We have not had an auction of lions for a long time.”

He said that the government has asked the wildlife department to auction some animals, because the number of lions in the safari park or Lahore zoo exceeds the capacity, then the extra animals are auctioned, but this also has a method.

‘It’s not like anyone can come and buy it. The buyer of the lion would be checked. He must have NOC. There must be a place to keep the lion.’

Space required for lion

Ghulam Rasool said that in the case of a pair of lions and lionesses or lionesses and cubs, it should be 500 square meters, while the number of cubs will come later, 50 square meters more space will be required for each cub.

‘In other words, the enclosure you are building will have to leave enough space that can be given to the coming children.’

He said that apart from this, the height of the enclosure should be three and a half meters, while the area inside the enclosure should be at least 15 square meters.

**Interview with Tanveer Janjua, Deputy Director of the Lahore Wildlife Department**

**Editor:** Thank you for joining us today, Mr. Janjua. Recent events⁣ surrounding social media influencer Saqib Ahmed and his ⁢illegal possession of wild animals have ⁣raised important questions about wildlife conservation and‌ regulations in ‌our society. Can you start by telling us what specific actions the Lahore Wildlife Department has taken in this incident?

**Tanveer Janjua:** Thank you for having ⁤me. As you mentioned, our department took immediate action following a report about Saqib Ahmed’s activities. We collaborated with ⁣the ⁣Lahore Police to conduct a raid at his residence, where ⁢we discovered two lions and a tiger. These animals were then relocated to Jallo Park, and Mr. Ahmed was ⁤arrested⁤ and charged ‌with illegal possession of wild animals and promoting ⁣dangerous ⁤activities involving them on social media.

**Editor:** It must have been quite a scene. What motivated the department to act swiftly in this case, especially‌ considering the popularity of Saqib’s TikTok account?

**Tanveer Janjua:** The primary motivation⁢ is the safety of both the⁤ animals and the public. Social media can influence people significantly, and it’s⁢ alarming when someone monetizes‌ dangerous interactions⁢ with wild animals. We‌ received a direct complaint from an individual who attempted Saqib’s challenge, which provided us grounds to⁢ act. Our responsibility is to protect wildlife and ensure that individuals ⁢promote ethical‌ practices.

**Editor:**⁤ Can you elaborate on⁢ the legal implications for those who keep wild animals without proper authorization?

**Tanveer Janjua:** Certainly. Keeping wild animals requires a No Objection Certificate‌ (NOC) from the Deputy Commissioner. This⁣ process involves a thorough inspection to confirm that the owner can safely house these animals. In Saqib’s case, he failed to follow this⁢ legal route, leading to ⁢his charges.‌ Our department is committed to enforcing these laws and will take actions similar⁣ to Saqib’s against anyone else who violates them.

**Editor:** There are likely other influencers who engage in similar practices on platforms like TikTok and Instagram. Is the Lahore Wildlife Department prepared to tackle these cases?

**Tanveer Janjua:** Yes, we are⁢ fully mobilized to address cases of illegal wildlife possession and promotion. We’re actively monitoring social media platforms for such content, and the department will take necessary ‍action against anyone who exploits wild animals for entertainment or profit.

**Editor:** what message do you have‌ for the public regarding the handling and ‌advertisement ⁢of wild animals on social media?

**Tanveer Janjua:** I urge everyone to⁤ understand ⁤that wild animals should not be treated as pets‌ or mere attractions. They are part of our natural environment and deserve to ‍be treated with respect and care. We encourage the public to report any suspicious activities related to wildlife. Together, we can help ensure their protection⁣ and maintain a balance within ⁣our ecosystem.

**Editor:** Thank⁤ you, Mr. Janjua, for your insightful comments and for the vital⁢ work your⁣ department is doing⁣ to protect wildlife. We appreciate your time today.

**Tanveer Janjua:** Thank you for having me.
