During a lively discussion on MBC’s “Radio Star,” musical actor Kim So-hyun revealed the impressive academic legacy of her family, all of whom are graduates of Seoul National University.
Kim So-hyun was joined by fellow guests Yeo Esther, Lee Dong-jin, and Kim Da-dak on the show, which aired on the 6th, where they shared intriguing anecdotes and personal experiences.
On this memorable episode, Kim So-hyun boldly shared, “Son Jun-ho told me to refrain from discussing this, but I must reveal it. My father is an alumnus of Seoul National University Medical School, my mother graduated from the College of Music at the same prestigious university, my younger brother also attended Seoul National University, my younger sister completed her studies at the College of Music there, and I myself graduated from the College of Music of Seoul National University. Our family boasts an impressive record of master’s degrees or higher from this institution,” capturing the attention of the audience with her insights.
To substantiate her claims amidst skepticism, Kim So-hyun remarked, “Many have said, ‘Isn’t that too good to be true?’ Therefore, I even brought my family along to the Seoul National University newspaper for proof. While it’s common for people to say, ‘My parents forced me to choose this school,’ that is not my case. I have my own ambitions, and I’ve pushed myself towards them. My father even had a say in my younger brother’s choice of major.”
Delving deeper into her family’s unique approach to education, Kim So-hyun elaborated on the unconventional methods employed by her parents to ensure their children attended Seoul National University. She recounted how, during her high school years, her father went as far as to cut the TV cables at home, leaving her deprived of television for nearly a decade. “I didn’t watch TV at home,” she recounted, reflecting on the extreme measures taken to prioritize academics.
Every weekend, the family would embark on drives to Gwanaksan Mountain, which she initially viewed as simply a family outing but later recognized as a source of pressure. “Being the eldest child brought its own set of burdens,” she admitted, revealing the weight of expectations placed upon her.
As a humorous yet poignant comparison to the past, she recounted her father’s words during a trip to New York, where he jokingly remarked, “I took you to Gwanaksan Mountain, but you’re asking me about sending you to an Ivy League school?” This highlights the contrasts in their educational journeys and the playful nature of their family discussions.
