Dn its quest for the Summer Olympics and Paralympics, India is taking another step forward.

A little over a year after the formalization of a candidacy by Prime Minister Narendra Modi before the 141st Session of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) then meeting in Bombayet after the visit of a delegation to Paris for the 2024 Olympicsthe most populous country in the world is revealed more.

A letter of intent was in fact sent on October 1, 2024 by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to the IOC Future Host Commission.

Given the regulations in force within the Olympic Movement, this approach was essential to safeguard the country’s ambition, the IOA being – as the National Olympic Committee (NOC) – the only body with the power to submit a candidacy of India in organizing the Games.

As a source close to the matter recently clarified with everyday life « India Today » :

This monumental opportunity could bring substantial benefits, fostering economic growth, social progress and youth empowerment across the country.

The sending of the missive confirming India’s interest in the Games has been confirmed on social networks by the President of the IOA, Pilavullakandi Thekkeparambil Usha or PT Usha. The leader also confirmed the 2036 edition as being the deadline favored by the Indian authorities.

The announcement of the said shipment in any case comes at a pivotal period for the country’s Olympic and Paralympic ambition.

Confronted with a serious governance crisis for several monthsthe IOA is today under the direct threat of an administrative sanction from the IOC which could possibly result in a suspension. Such a prospect would nullify any candidacy in the short or medium term.

For the moment, the institution of Lausanne (Switzerland) has simply suspended the granting of subsidies from Olympic Solidarity to the IOA, as long as the Indian body is not able to communicate the status of its accounts and its management.

Beyond this important issue, the announcement of the sending of a letter of intent to the IOC headquarters also marks the desire of the IOA to maintain the positive attention of Olympic decision-makers as the IOC prepares to change President during the spring of 2025.

So far, Thomas Bach showed interest in the Indian candidacymultiplying the encouraging words towards the project leaders.

It must be said that India clearly constitutes an essential new market, both on a sporting and commercial level, with the underlying importance of the demographic criterion which could considerably increase audiences for the Games over the coming years. The inclusion of cricket in the Olympic sports program for the Los Angeles 2028 Games has also demonstrated India’s potentially growing place on the Olympic sceneeven if there are many challenges ahead on the route of the five rings.

In addition to the IOC and its partners, an Indian candidacy is also closely scrutinized by other countries declared or at least willing to present a candidacy for the 2036 edition, whether in Asia, the Middle East, or elsewhere in the world.

The country’s ambition is also carefully monitored by France, which intends to share its expertise in major events with India and its experience acquired with the candidacy and preparations for organizing the Paris 2024 Games.

On the sidelines of the Games, the President of the French Republic had notably reiterated his encouragement for the emergence of a candidacy and a strengthening of bilateral partnerships between the two countries.

As Emmanuel Macron explained during an interview for JioCinema revealed on August 12:

Firstly, I firmly believe in your country and its future, and its ability to build and organize such events.

I think the competition is fierce. This fact should not be underestimated. I remember that seven years ago, when I went to Lausanne, we were in competition with the United States, with the candidacy of Los Angeles. We reached an agreement and, in the end, it was, and still is, an excellent cooperation. The competition is therefore in itself excellent preparation.

Secondly, we have worked and we are working together with India.
