### Interview with Citlalli Hernandez, Head of the Women’s Secretariat in Querétaro
**Interviewer:** Welcome, Citlalli. Thank you for joining us today to discuss the recent decision by the Querétaro Prosecutor’s Office to withdraw criminal charges against the 14-year-old girl who suffered a spontaneous abortion. Can you tell us more about how this decision came to be?
**Citlalli Hernandez:** Thank you for having me. The decision to withdraw the charges was the result of a crucial dialogue between our office and the Prosecutor’s Office. We recognized the urgency of this situation, especially considering the circumstances surrounding the girl’s pregnancy, which was a result of rape. It was important for us to prioritize her well-being and future.
**Interviewer:** Absolutely. The initial pursuit of a homicide charge against her was shocking to many. How does this decision reflect a shift in understanding the complexities of such cases?
**Citlalli Hernandez:** This case highlighted the need for more compassionate and nuanced responses to sexual violence and its consequences. The law must protect victims rather than further victimize them. Our collaboration with the Prosecutor’s Office aims to ensure that we address these sensitive issues with care and support instead of criminalization.
**Interviewer:** It’s encouraging to hear that the government is providing support for the girl moving forward. You mentioned ‘reparation and non-repetition.’ Can you elaborate on what that will entail?
**Citlalli Hernandez:** Certainly. We are committed to providing comprehensive support for Esmeralda. This includes psychological assistance, educational opportunities, and ongoing monitoring to foster her well-being. Our goal is to create an environment where she can heal and grow without the fear of past traumas repeating in her life.
**Interviewer:** That sounds like a positive step forward. What message do you hope this sends to other young women who may find themselves in similar situations?
**Citlalli Hernandez:** We want to send a clear message that survivors of abuse will be treated with dignity and support, rather than facing criminal charges for the actions or situations thrust upon them. We hope to shift the narrative to one that empowers women and girls to seek help and recovery without the threat of legal repercussions.
**Interviewer:** Thank you, Citlalli, for shedding light on this delicate situation. Your efforts and those of the government are vital in changing the landscape for young women in Mexico.
**Citlalli Hernandez:** Thank you for bringing attention to this important issue. Together, we can advocate for change and support those in need.
