The chilling 2009 thriller Orphan not only sent shivers down spines but also dominated the box office, raking in a staggering $78.8 million (£60.7 million) globally while operating on a modest $20 million (£15.33 million) budget.
This highly acclaimed film revolved around a seemingly innocent 9-year-old Russian orphan named Esther, who is adopted by an unsuspecting American family, only for them to discover her dark and murderous secrets.
What the family initially mistook for childlike innocence was actually a front for Esther’s true identity: a 31-year-old woman escaping from a psychiatric facility, driven by deadly intentions.
Delving into the backstory, a prequel named Orphan First Kill was released in 2022, reuniting audiences with Fuhrman, who at 25 years old, returned to portray the same character she first embodied at just 12.
Though the second film was well-received, some critics questioned the credibility of casting an actress in her twenties to convincingly play a child, as the suspension of disbelief became more challenging for viewers.
With the announcement of Fuhrman’s return, fans are left scratching their heads once more, pondering how filmmakers plan to convince audiences of her adult portrayal of a child character yet again.
As fans connected on social media, comments poured in, with some expressing outright confusion about Fuhrman’s casting. One user, cold_cashdivine, stated, “Ngl I was being nice during Orphan 2; there is no way she can do Orphan 3—let’s start telling the truth.”
Jim_Shewss humorously remarked, “She’s only like 40 now 😂😂😂😂,” indicating how absurd it seems to cast an adult in a child’s role.
Another fan, AnimeEyesKM, suggested an intriguing narrative twist, saying, “She is almost 28, if this is another prequel or between the first two movies, that is crazy. They just need to write that she survived the first movie, and someone pulled her outta the lake when she was floating down or she got out herself.”
One fan summarized their confusion about the franchise’s timeline, saying, “The actress Isabelle Fuhrman is 27 years old, so she is basically an adult pretending to be a child pretending to be an adult.”
Adding to the laughter, GamerxShift quipped, “She’s gonna be an actual old woman, and they’ll still be making these movies lol,” poking fun at the age reality of the series.
Despite the mixed reactions, numerous horror fans have voiced their unwavering support for Fuhrman, emphasizing that she remains integral to the character of Esther. DaaChazz noted on X, “She’s the only one who can play that role,” showcasing the loyalty she commands among her fans.
Others playfully expressed that they would continue to support Fuhrman’s endeavors regardless of age, with Hennytwote humorously stating, “I’m fully in support of Isabelle Fuhrman at 50 years old playing Esther in the Orphan (2049) re-quel. Let’s keep this going as long as possible.”
One enthusiastic comment read, “Popping bottles for Orphan 3. I dgaf if Isabelle Fuhrman can play Esther till she’s 73,” demonstrating the dedication of her fanbase.
In speaking with Metro, Fuhrman shared insights into the creative process behind returning to her famed role, explaining, “We did a camera test in Los Angeles before deciding whether or not I’d be able to come back where we tried prosthetics and different lighting setups and different tricks to make me look smaller and it was really that that sold everyone.”
Reflecting on her excitement about the project, she added, “For me, it was a no-brainer. I was really excited to revisit this role, and the script was just so good too.”
When asked about the challenges of reprising such a complex character after years away, Fuhrman remarked, “I think it was more me convincing the studio I could do it,” highlighting the significant age gap between her original filming and the current sequel.
She sums it up poignantly, stating, “You think about it – it’s a pretty big age gap. I was 10 when I filmed the first one to 23 when we filmed this one two years ago.”

**Interview with Isabelle Fuhrman on Reprising Her Role in Orphan 3**
**Metro:** Isabelle, welcome! We’re thrilled about the announcement of Orphan 3. How does it feel to be returning to this iconic role as Esther once again?
**Isabelle Fuhrman:** Thank you so much! It’s exciting and surreal. If you had told me back when I was 12 that I would still be playing Esther years later, I wouldn’t have believed it. Esther is such a complex character, and I love the challenges that come with portraying her.
**Metro:** Fans have mixed emotions about your return, especially regarding your age and the portrayal of Esther as a child. What can you say to address their concerns?
**Isabelle Fuhrman:** I understand the skepticism. It’s definitely a unique situation to have a 27-year-old play a child-like character again. The filmmakers have some really creative ideas for how to explain this in the narrative, and I’m excited for audiences to see where we take Esther’s story next.
**Metro:** The previous films have sparked a lot of discussions around the credibility of casting. How do you ensure the portrayal remains believable for viewers this time around?
**Isabelle Fuhrman:** It’s all about the writing and direction. We’re focused on creating a compelling story that justifies everything. I think adding depth to Esther’s character will help bridge the gap between her age and the character’s persona.
**Metro:** Social media is buzzing with fan reactions, some humorous and some questioning. What’s your take on the fans’ mixed responses?
**Isabelle Fuhrman:** I love the passion of the fanbase! They have a lot of feelings about Esther and the franchise, which shows how much they care. It’s important for us to listen and respond to that, even if some of the reactions are light-hearted or critical. The dialogue keeps things interesting!
**Metro:** Looking ahead, what are you hoping to explore in Orphan 3 that wasn’t addressed in the previous films?
**Isabelle Fuhrman:** I really want to dig deeper into Esther’s psyche and maybe even show a different side of her. There are layers to her character that we haven’t fully explored yet. Plus, I want to make sure we keep the suspense and thrill that fans loved in the first movie!
**Metro:** Any final thoughts for your fans eagerly awaiting the film?
**Isabelle Fuhrman:** Just a huge thank you! Your support means the world to me. I assure you, we’re working hard to make Orphan 3 something special that you’ll all enjoy. And I’m excited for you to see how Esther evolves this time around.
**Metro:** We can’t wait! Thank you for your time, Isabelle.
**Isabelle Fuhrman:** Thank you!
