The Attorney General’s Office announced a security measure in a detention center against William Benavides, known as the Devil, a 41-year-old man, homeless, accused of being responsible for the murder of James Orlando Gutiérrez Gil, a motorcyclist who lost his life on the night of September 1 in Medellín.
According to the investigation by the Prosecutor’s Office, Benavides would have thrown a rock at Gutiérrez’s motorcycle, who was traveling through the Sevilla neighborhood, in the northeast of the capital of Antioquia. The impact of the stone hit the motorcyclist in the chest, causing him to lose control of the vehicle and crashing into a concrete post. The fall resulted in fatal injuries, and Gutiérrez died from blunt trauma to the chest, according to the opinion of the National Institute of Legal Medicine.

The tragedy occurred when Gutiérrez was accompanied by his romantic partner, Luisa Fernanda Guevara Flores, 28, who was traveling as a barbecue grill. Guevara also suffered injuries in the accident, although his condition was not as serious as that of his partner.
The case was investigated by the Prosecutor’s Office in conjunction with the Technical Investigation Corps (CTI) and the National Police, who carried out follow-up work that allowed the capture of alias El Diablo last Friday, November 1. The man was arrested in commune 5 of Medellín, after authorities identified his connection to the crime through video evidence and eyewitness testimonies.
During the hearing, Benavides did not accept the charges brought by the Prosecutor’s Office.
The mayor of Medellín, Federico Gutiérrez Zuluaga, also referred to the capture of alias el Diablo:

**Interview with Crime Analyst Sophia Rodriguez on Recent Violent Incidents in Medellín**
**Host:** Welcome, Sophia. Thank you for joining us today to discuss the recent violent incidents we’ve seen in Medellín, including the tragic death of an American citizen and the murder involving a rock thrown at a motorcyclist.
**Sophia:** Thank you for having me. It’s important to address these issues and discuss their implications.
**Host:** Let’s start with the incident involving the American killed with a crossbow in Envigado. What are your thoughts on the nature of this crime?
**Sophia:** This incident is particularly alarming because it involves a weapon that is not commonly associated with everyday street violence. The use of a crossbow suggests a level of premeditation and suggests that the crime was targeted rather than random. This raises questions about the safety of expatriates in the area and the motivations behind such violent acts.
**Host:** Absolutely. What can you say about the alleged perpetrators in this case?
**Sophia:** Reports indicate that the suspects include a woman and an accomplice. This introduces a complex dynamic—female involvement in violent crime can sometimes lead to different motivations and strategies. It’s essential for the authorities to conduct a thorough investigation to understand the context and potential networks involved.
**Host:** Now shifting to the case of William Benavides, who is accused of killing a motorcyclist by throwing a rock. What does this indicate about the types of violence that are emerging in Medellín?
**Sophia:** The incident involving Benavides highlights a disturbing trend of public violence. Attacks on individuals using everyday objects can turn deadly in a moment. This speaks to broader social issues, including mental health and homelessness, as we see individuals like Benavides becoming involved in violent acts, possibly due to unstable circumstances.
**Host:** Both incidents point to concerns about public safety. How do you think authorities can address such violence moving forward?
**Sophia:** It’s crucial for law enforcement to enhance community engagement and preventive measures. Addressing underlying social issues, providing mental health support, and developing community outreach programs could help defuse potential conflicts before they escalate. Additionally, increasing the visibility of law enforcement in troubled areas might deter such acts of violence.
**Host:** Thank you, Sophia. It’s vital that we keep discussing these issues in our community to foster a safer environment for everyone.
**Sophia:** Thank you for having me. Awareness is the first step toward creating meaningful change.
**Host:** Thank you to our viewers for tuning in. Stay safe, and we’ll see you next time.
