Coldplay vocalist Chris Martin fell into an open trap door on stage while performing at Marvel Stadium, Melbourne, Australia, Sunday (3/11)
In a video circulating on social media, Martin is seen walking backwards on stage while telling the audience about their “Music of the Spheres” world tour, before finally falling into the hole. The audience sounded shocked, while nearby stage crew immediately helped Martin get back to his feet.
A fan who recorded the incident wrote on X (formerly Twitter): “The moment Chris Martin fell through a trap door right in front of me at tonight’s #Coldplay concert.”

After getting up, Martin said to the crowd, “That wasn’t planned!” He also joked, “Oh my gosh, it was almost a YouTube moment!” before thanking one of the crew who helped him.
Coldplay’s massive international tour began in March 2022 and is scheduled to end in September 2025 with a 10-day series of concerts at Wembley Stadium, London. After the final concert in Melbourne, Martin along with guitarist Jonny Buckland, bassist Guy Berryman and drummer Will Champion will head to Sydney to complete the Australian tour before continuing on to New Zealand.
This record-breaking tour has been the source of many viral moments since its inception. A number of special guests have accompanied Coldplay on stage for surprise appearances — including Maggie Rogers, Shawn Mendes, Michael J. Fox and more.

Last summer, ahead of the first of four Dublin concerts in August, Martin even performed spontaneously outside the stadium with several collaborators of the song “WE PRAY.”
On the main street of Grafton in Dublin, Nigerian singer Burna Boy, British rapper Little Simz, Palestinian-Chilean singer Elyanna and Argentinian singer Tini joined Martin for this pop-up performance.
In a video shared on Instagram at the time, Coldplay called the night a “magical moment.”

“WE PRAY. Grafton Street, Dublin,” the band wrote. “Magical moment with @burnaboygram, @littlesimz, @elyanna, @tinistoessel. Thank you to everyone who attended, and to TikTok who helped make it happen.”
Coldplay is also preparing to release new music. In June, the group released their 10th studio album, Moon Music, along with its accompanying single “feelslikeimfallinginlove.” Despite the release of this new album and world tour, Martin revealed that Coldplay only plans to release 12 “official” albums before stopping creating new work.
“We’re only going to make 12 official albums, and that’s serious,” he said in an interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe that was released exclusively on PEOPLE in September.
“If we do something together after that besides touring, then it will be something different, or something on the side, or maybe a compilation of unfinished things,” explains Martin. (People/Z-3)
