Both Suzuki and Toyota have their business roots in the city of Enshu, in the western part of Shizuoka Prefecture in Japan, and both companies once took on the challenge of replacing machine tool manufacturing with car manufacturing. Since 2016, when Suzuki’s then-Chairman (now Senior Advisor) Osamu Suzuki and Toyota’s then-President (now Chairman) Akio Toyoda began exploring a business partnership, the two companies have engaged in extensive collaboration to provide people freedom of movement and driving pleasure.
Cooperation covers various areas, including vehicle production, supply and development of electrified vehicles. Through the successful cooperation, the markets of co-produced cars have expanded to Japan, India, Europe, Africa and the Middle East.
Now the first jointly developed electric car is at the epicenter of the relationship between the two companies. Drivers will have the opportunity to purchase a representative of a segment showing high growth – an electric SUV model. It will be delivered worldwide. The newcomer will also help both companies implement initiatives aimed at creating a carbon-free society.
The new model has been designed as an electric car from the start. The agile SUV with bright electric drive characteristics will cover a long distance without stopping and will allow you to enjoy a comfortable interior. The car will also be available with all-wheel drive. It will ensure exceptional passability on poor roads and better driving characteristics.
Suzuki, Toyota, and Daihatsu Motor Corporation have made great use of their strengths in developing the car’s electric drivetrain and platform.
Suzuki will supply Toyota dealerships worldwide with our first electric car. I am glad that this has only made the cooperation between the two companies even closer. While we will continue to be competitors, we will deepen our cooperation in solving social problems as we are committed to creating a zero-carbon society,” said Suzuki President Toshihiro Suzuki.
“Using the jointly developed electric vehicle drive unit and platform, we will take a new step in the field of electrified vehicles. This will allow consumers around the world to offer a wide range of products that contribute to a low-carbon society. We would like to learn from each other, learn from each other’s strengths, compete and continue to create a cleaner environment together in various ways,” said Toyota President Koji Sato.

**Interview with Dr. Hideo Nishida, Automotive Industry Expert**
**Interviewer:** Thank you for joining us today, Dr. Nishida. There’s been some exciting news about the partnership between Suzuki and Toyota regarding a new electric SUV. Can you tell us more about what makes this collaboration significant?
**Dr. Nishida:** Thank you for having me. The partnership between Suzuki and Toyota is indeed significant. Both companies, hailing from the same region in Japan, have a strong history of collaboration that dates back to 2016. This new electric SUV represents the culmination of their efforts to innovate and adapt to changing market demands, specifically the increasing shift towards electrification in the automotive industry.
**Interviewer:** You mentioned the electric SUV will be produced in India beginning in the spring of 2025. What role does this play in their overall strategy?
**Dr. Nishida:** Producing the SUV in India is a strategic move for both companies. India is a rapidly growing market for electric vehicles, and local production allows them to tap into this demand while keeping costs manageable. Additionally, it highlights their commitment to sustainability and supporting the transition to a carbon-free society by reducing emissions associated with transportation.
**Interviewer:** The SUV is said to feature impressive autonomy and electric drive characteristics. How important are these features in today’s automotive market?
**Dr. Nishida:** Very important! Today’s consumers are increasingly looking for vehicles that not only perform well but also offer long-range capabilities. An electric SUV that boasts a “generous” range caters to the needs of buyers who may be concerned about charging infrastructure and range anxiety. This appeal, combined with the comfort and advanced technology, positions it well within the competitive EV market.
**Interviewer:** The all-wheel-drive option is also mentioned. Why is this feature particularly appealing for an SUV?
**Dr. Nishida:** All-wheel drive is a highly attractive feature for SUV buyers, especially in markets with diverse weather conditions and terrains. It provides added safety and capability, appealing to adventurers and families alike. Coupled with electric power, it can offer a combination of performance and stability that is very attractive in the SUV segment.
**Interviewer:** As this new electric SUV approaches its launch, what should we expect regarding its impact on the market?
**Dr. Nishida:** I anticipate a positive impact. The joint development of this model signals the seriousness of both companies in addressing the demand for electric vehicles globally. By offering a competitively priced, high-quality electric SUV, they can potentially capture significant market share and stimulate further interest in electric mobility, thus accelerating the transition towards a more sustainable automotive future.
**Interviewer:** Thank you for your insights, Dr. Nishida. This partnership and the upcoming SUV sound like they will play a key role in the future of the auto industry.
**Dr. Nishida:** Thank you for having me. I’m excited to see how this development unfolds!
