BELGRADE, Serbia (AP) — Novak Djokovic will not be able to defend his title at the ATP Finals after withdrawing from the season-ending event due to injury.
The Serbian star announced his absence from the match in Turin on Tuesday via Stories on his Instagram account.
“I’m very keen to go there but due to injury I won’t be playing next week. I apologize to everyone who planned to come and see me.
The competition that brings together the best eight of the year – traditionally known as the Masters Cup – begins on Sunday.
Djokovic holds the tournament record with seven titles. He defeated current world number one Jannik Sinner in last year’s final.
“I wish all the players a great game. See you soon!” he emphasized.
Djokovic finished the year with a 37-9 record, the highlight of which was defeating Carlos Alcaraz to win his first Olympic gold medal at the Paris Games. This is his 99th career title.
This year he failed to break his record of 24 Grand Slam titles. After losing in the third round of the US Open, he played just one match in the Davis Cup and reached the final at last month’s Shanghai Masters, where he lost to Sinner. He withdrew from the Paris Masters due to injury.
In addition to Sinner and Alkaraz, other participants in the ATP Finals include Alexander Zverev, Daniil Medvedev, Taylor Fritz, Kasper Rudd, Alex De Minaur and Andrei Rublev.
