Why “swing states” produce a president

Why “swing states” produce a president

In the final stretch for the ballot box, however, they focus particularly on seven of them. These are the “swing states”, where the majorities are extremely volatile, in contrast to the “safe states”, where it is almost taken for granted that most people traditionally vote either for the Republicans or for the Democrats.

This means that swing states can decide the outcome. That is why they come under the “microscope” of the gladiators, who organize in these states large pre-election gatherings and pay huge sums for pre-election spots until the last minute, claiming the vote of the undecided.

The importance of “swing states” is also reflected in the Electoral College. In the USA the president and vice president are not elected directly by the “popular vote”, i.e. by the voters, but by the electors, who in turn are elected by the voters. Because of the majoritarian electoral system a presidential candidate can win the “popular vote” but not the presidency. This happened in 2000, when George W. Bush won the presidential election with fewer votes than Al Gore, and also in 2016, when Donald Trump was elected, although he received fewer votes than Hillary Clinton.

In general, the economy is a top criterion for voters in the US, while the issue of abortion is also considered important. Beyond that, each state has its own, local priorities and this certainly applies to the “swing states” as well. Let’s see them in detail, in alphabetical order.

Arizona

For voters in Arizona, priorities are determined by geographic factors. The state shares a common border with Mexico, so it is at the center of US policy to combat illegal immigration. Outgoing President Joe Biden had assigned Vice President and current Democratic candidate Kamala Harris the difficult task of finding solutions to decompress the crisis. Many believe that Kamala Harris didn’t make it. Donald Trump does not fail to remind it at every opportunity.

On the other hand, due to the large influx of immigrants, Arizona is one of the fastest growing states in the US. With a third of the population now Hispanic, their voting behavior will be decisive in the outcome.

In an effort to develop the local economy, the state of Arizona is emphasizing manufacturing. The CHIPS Act, which Biden introduced to shore up the semiconductor industry, will help finance the necessary investments, but it will take time for the new industrial units to start operating.

North Carolina

It was the last state to appear on the list of swing states. Before Biden dropped out of the race, Trump appeared to be securing a lead in North Carolina. Harris managed to close the gap significantly. The fact is, however, that in this particular state, the Democrats have lost 10 of the last 11 elections, so the matchup is predicted to be ambiguous.

Significant demographic changes have been recorded in North Carolina in recent decades. The percentage of whites has dropped to 60%, from 75% in 1990. But the overall population has also increased, as more retirees, retired officers, and new students settle in this state.

Michigan

It is the “heart” of the American automobile industry. It is the headquarters of Ford, General Motors and Chrysler, which has now joined the Stellantis Group. Keeping jobs in that industry is important to voters. By imposing tariffs, Joe Biden made sure to “protect” the auto industry from China’s competition in electrification. Governor Gretchen Whitmer, one of the most popular figures of the Democrats, is also based in Michigan. In the party’s primary election in February, many had avoided supporting Biden. Kamala Harris is probably making up for lost ground. To succeed, however, he will have to win over the numerous voters of Arab origin who live in Michigan. They traditionally support the Democrats, but this time their support cannot be taken for granted as the Democrats have sided with Israel in the war against Hamas.

Nevada

Immigration is a key issue for Nevada, as this state borders Mexico. One third of the population is Hispanic. An additional peculiarity is that the population of Nevada is one of the most urbanized in the USA.

The local economy is highly dependent on tourism. Since Biden took office, Nevada has seen the highest economic growth of any swing state. However, the unemployment rate remains the highest in the US.

Wisconsin

It is the state with the largest percentage of white voters of any swing state. In both 2016 and 2020, Wisconsin recorded one of the highest participation rates in the US. In both contests, however, the winner was decided by a margin of less than 25,000 votes. Another reminder of how important the role of “swing states” is for the outcome of presidential elections.

Pennsylvania

It is the state that “suffers” from the increased cost of living, more than any other. At the same time, however, drilling for natural gas extraction using the fracking method is increasing, with the result that Pennsylvania is now the largest producer of natural gas in the US after Texas.

Trump has always supported fracking, which is considered controversial at least by ecological standards. Kamala Harris previously proposed banning it, but is now keeping all options open, simply calling for stricter legislation.

Georgia

In 2020, Joe Biden won the state of Georgia. It was the first victory for the Democrats since 1992, but it was also an incredibly narrow victory, as Biden’s lead over Trump was no more than 0.2%.

Almost 33% of voters are black (one of the largest percentages in the US), which may favor Kamala Harris. It should be noted that in Georgia the Justice has prosecuted Trump for attempting to alter the election result in 2020.

OneSignal Web push notification example

⁣ It looks ⁤like you are working with JavaScript code⁣ that is related to advertisement ⁤integration ⁢on a web page. The code seems to‍ include asynchronous loading scripts for various advertising services like Google AdSense, OneSignal (for push notifications), Disqus (for comments), and others.

Here’s a summary of what each part of the code is intended for:

1. **Removing ‍AdSense‌ for Mobile**: The code checks if there are mobile AdSense slots and removes them if necessary.

2.⁣ **Handling AdSense Slots**: ⁤If there are⁣ AdSense slots present, it ⁢appears that there are intentions to⁤ load or configure them asynchronously.

3. **Phaistos Adman**: This part⁤ seems to queue ‌an ad unit⁣ for the Phaistos Adman service.

4. **OneSignal**: Initializes⁢ the OneSignal service for push notifications with a specific application ID.

5. **Disqus Configuration**: Configures ⁢Disqus for⁤ comments by specifying⁣ the⁤ page URL‍ and identifier. The script for Disqus is later appended after a timeout for delayed loading.

6.‌ **Callbacks and Asynchronous Loading**: There are multiple instances of `asyncLoadScript` which presumably loads scripts asynchronously. However, specific URLs or scripts‌ are not⁤ provided in the snippets you shared.

7. **Taboola/Project⁣ Agora, Google AdSense,‍ Glomex, and Dalecta**: Each ⁤of these sections⁤ appears to be prepared for the inclusion of additional ad scripts based⁣ on certain conditions, likely to optimize ad loading ‌for user experience.

8. **Commented Out Code**: Portions of the code are commented out, indicating that those were ‌either⁤ for ‌testing or alternative implementations that are currently not in ⁢use.

### Recommendations:

– Ensure that⁣ the‍ script URLs for `asyncLoadScript(‘…’)` are⁣ correctly specified, as they are currently incomplete.

– ‌Validate the⁣ logic for each ‌advertisement service to confirm ‌it’s working as intended.

– Test the performance of⁤ your ads and remove any unnecessary scripts‌ to avoid slowing down the⁣ page⁣ load⁢ time.

– Consider including error handling for the asynchronous loading of scripts to improve ⁤fault tolerance.

– Ensure GDPR compliance if your ads or scripts collect user data, especially given that you are using OneSignal for notifications. ⁣
