The New York City Marathon is a sacred thing in the Big Apple, and the 42,195-meter race that covers all five boroughs, i.e. Staten Island, Queens, Brooklyn, the Bronx and Manhattan, surpasses everything else. Streets are closed to surface traffic, traffic is diverted, and in such cases the subway is the only means of transportation that can be used to reach the destination. Luckily, New York’s subway system is one of the best in the world.
This year was the 53rd marathon in the city since 1970, the race had to be canceled twice, in 2012 due to Hurricane Sandy and in 2020 due to the pandemic. This year, the tournament coincided with the Brooklyn Nets-Detroit Piston NBA game, which was held at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
The visiting team would not have been able to travel to the arena by bus from their hotel, the surrounding streets were closed due to the marathon, and it was not an option to approach the arena by taxi.
So they chose the only possible and logical solution: they took the 3 subway to the Barclays Center.
The players and the passengers clearly enjoyed the unusual adventure and chatted with each other. It’s true that they barely fit in the subway car, they had to bend down when getting on and off, but the wedding rings didn’t fall off their fingers.
The unusual trip, which was the first time in the history of the NBA, that a team arrived to its game by subway, did not bother the Pistons players at all, and they won 106-92 with a great game.
The victory boosted the Pistons so much that they also beat the Los Angeles Lakers 115-103 on Monday night, and after being the worst team in the league for the past two seasons, they are now 3/5 in the midfield.
And the Internet was flooded with memes and funny comments from readers.

The NYC Marathon: A Spectacular Subway Adventure!
Well, well, well—if it isn’t that one Sunday of the year when the New York City Marathon struts into town and the entire city either cheers or curses the gods of cardio! Yes, folks, it’s a glorious 42,195-meter spectacle that takes over not just the streets, but the very essence of what it means to be an urbanite in the Big Apple. Dare I say, it’s more sacred than the last slice of pizza at 2 a.m.!
When race day arrives, it’s as if New York decides to throw a massive “no cars” party. Streets shut down, traffic diverts like an awkwardly choreographed dance number, and the only way to reach your destination is via the city’s world-renowned subway system. You know it’s good when it’s your only lifeline and not even the sight of a yellow cab can lift your spirits. And we all know you’re both excited and terrified to ride the subway—like jumping into a live episode of Survivor where the main challenge is not holding on to the pole for dear life!
Marathon Madness: The 53rd Annual Race!
This year marks the 53rd installment of the NYC Marathon and if that’s not an achievement, I don’t know what is! Since 1970, this legendary race has not only crossed finish lines but also rollercoastered through calamities—canceled due to Hurricane Sandy in 2012 and a little thing called the pandemic in 2020. But come hell or high water, this marathon stands tall with its runners trotting through all five boroughs— Statan Island, Queens, Brooklyn, the Bronx, and of course, Manhattan—as if they’re on some divine scavenger hunt!
Imagine the buzz this year when it happened to coincide with the Brooklyn Nets’ game against the Detroit Pistons at the Barclays Center. Now that’s what I call multitasking! But, uh oh! To the horror of the visiting team, their bus couldn’t weave through the marathon madness. Taxis? Forget it! They might as well be unicorns. So what did they do instead? They hopped on the 3 subway line. Yes, you heard right—an NBA team traveling like they were going to high school gym practice!
Epic Subway Wins!
The players, reminiscent of sardines in a can, squeezed into a subway car with as much grace as a hippo on roller skates. But hey, at least their wedding rings stayed put—priorities, people! And there they were, mingling with New Yorkers. “Boys! You’re doing it wrong, get used to the subway, you’ll end up being regulars!” And guess what? Not only did they source a *new* form of team bonding—like a high-octane team-building exercise, they also managed to secure a shiny victory over the Nets with a score of 106-92. Who knew a bit of public transport could get your game face on?
But wait! It didn’t stop there! The Pistons went ahead and knocked the socks off the Los Angeles Lakers too, bringing their record back from the abyss at a revitalizing 3-5! It’s almost like the subway cleansed their competitive spirits! Maybe they should consider it a full-time travel strategy. “If we take the subway again, we might *actually* win the championship!”
The Internet Goes Wild!
Oh, and let’s not forget the hilarious memes and online banter. The internet was alive with quips, calling the trip a perfect team-builder and suggesting they’d finally experienced ordinary life. “Looks like you didn’t have money for a taxi!” classic! Well, it’s a rite of passage in New York, really. Even the rich and famous can take a spin in the mosh pit of humanity!

The New York City Marathon is an iconic event that holds a special place in the hearts of New Yorkers. This monumental 42,195-meter race winds through all five boroughs—Staten Island, Queens, Brooklyn, the Bronx, and Manhattan—transforming the city into a festive celebration of endurance and community spirit. On marathon day, the city comes to a halt as streets are closed to surface traffic and diversions are put in place, with the subway serving as the primary means of transportation for those trying to navigate through the bustling metropolis. Fortunately, New York boasts one of the most extensive and efficient subway systems in the world, making it a reliable option for getting around during this time.
This year marked the 53rd edition of the New York City Marathon since its inception in 1970, a momentous occasion considering that the race has faced cancellations twice: once in 2012 due to the devastating impacts of Hurricane Sandy and again in 2020 as a result of the global pandemic. Interestingly, this year’s marathon coincided with the exhilarating matchup between the Brooklyn Nets and the Detroit Pistons, taking place at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, adding to the vibrant atmosphere of the day.
The Pistons, unable to navigate the city streets blocked off for the marathon, faced a logistical challenge. The surrounding roads were impassable, making it impossible for the visiting team to reach the arena via bus from their hotel, and hailing a taxi was not an option.
In a surprising twist, the Pistons opted for the most feasible and sensible solution: taking the 3 subway train directly to the Barclays Center. This unprecedented decision was not only practical but also an adventure that allowed both players and fellow subway passengers to relish the shared experience.
As the NBA team traversed the underground, they engaged in light-hearted conversations with fellow riders, bringing a sense of camaraderie to the journey. Although they experienced a tight squeeze in the subway car—having to stoop down to enter and exit—their wedding rings remained secure on their fingers, much to their relief.
This memorable subway trip marks a historic first in the annals of the NBA, as a team arrived at their game via subway for the very first time. The players clearly embraced the novelty of their arrival, turning any potential concerns into a spirited performance as they defeated the Brooklyn Nets with a score of 106-92.
The Pistons’ performance not only uplifted their morale but also carried over to their next game, resulting in a stunning victory against the Los Angeles Lakers with a score of 115-103 on Monday night. After struggling as one of the least successful teams in the league over the past two seasons, the Pistons now find themselves with a promising 3-5 record, showing signs of resurgence and competitiveness.
Meanwhile, social media erupted with a flurry of memes and humorous remarks from fans and followers, celebrating this unique chapter in sports history.
