A shameful act was recorded this weekend in Pacho (Cundinamarca) when an older adult, in an obvious state of intoxication, ran over a motorcycle while escaping from the Police. The woman was in the company of other women who were also drunk.
“When requesting the documentation and explaining that the corresponding protocol had to be followed, the driver reacted aggressively and prevented compliance with the procedure. Subsequently, he tried to ram the authority with his vehicle and fled the scene,” the Pacho Mayor’s Office indicated in a press release.
After the crash, the woman gets out of the vehicle and, shouting, demands respect “for these gray hairs,” while the authorities carried out the respective controls.
“Glory to God. I ask you to help us because we were peasants, we did a lot of work in our lives and what we have today is the result of our work,” the woman said to those who were observing her and recording the embarrassing scene.

The woman underwent a breathalyzer test at the San Rafael de Pacho hospital and according to the report, the driver had a grade 2 level of intoxication, so they immobilized her vehicle and gave her a summons.
The Mayor’s Office of Pacho reiterated to citizens to avoid driving while intoxicated and “we urge respect for the traffic authorities for the safety of all.”

**Interview with María López, Traffic Safety Advocate**
**Interviewer:** Thank you for joining us today, María. We’ve recently seen Bogotá launch a new campaign aimed at reducing drink driving, particularly in light of alarming incidents like the one in Pacho where an older woman, clearly intoxicated, attempted to flee from the police. What are your thoughts on these ongoing issues?
**María López:** Thank you for having me. It’s truly unfortunate that we continue to see these incidents. The case in Pacho highlights a broader problem that has been persistent in Colombia and many other places. Drink driving not only endangers the life of the driver but also puts everyone else on the road at risk.
**Interviewer:** The new campaign by Bogotá officials seems to be taking a strong stance. What specific measures do you think should be implemented as part of this campaign to effectively reduce drink driving?
**María López:** I think a combination of education, law enforcement, and community involvement is crucial. First, the campaign should focus on awareness, educating people about the dangers of drinking and driving—not just through advertisements but also through community programs. Secondly, there should be strict enforcement of existing laws, including regular checkpoints and harsher penalties for offenders. promoting alternative transportation methods, like ride-sharing and public transit, is essential for providing safe options for those who may be drinking.
**Interviewer:** In your view, why do you think some people, including older adults, feel entitled or compelled to drive despite being intoxicated?
**María López:** This often boils down to a combination of underestimating the risks and the cultural attitudes toward drinking. Some people think they can handle it, or they have a sense of invincibility. For older adults, it can also involve a level of denial about their abilities. It’s important that we shift the narrative and continue to emphasize that driving under the influence is not just illegal—it’s unsafe for everyone.
**Interviewer:** It’s clear that ongoing education is key. As a community member, what can individuals do to contribute to this campaign and help promote safer driving habits?
**María López:** Individuals can play a significant role by personally committing not to drive after drinking and by encouraging friends and family to do the same. Sharing supportive resources, such as designated driver programs, and being proactive in discussions about the risks associated with alcohol and driving can also help change mindsets. It’s about fostering a culture of responsibility and care for one another.
**Interviewer:** Thank you, María, for your insights. It’s essential to continue this conversation and take actionable steps toward making our roads safer for everyone.
**María López:** Absolutely. Thank you for shining a light on this issue. We all have a part to play in keeping our communities safe.
