J. Biden will aim for 100 billion dollar package for Ukraine, Israel, Taiwan, the US southern border

The request, first reported by Bloomberg and not yet announced by the White House, comes without Congress still having a House Speaker.

Republican Kevin McCarthy was ousted as chairman earlier this month in a historic vote in which his own hard-right Republicans blamed him for a string of broken promises and were furious about his cooperation with Democrats.

The package aims to unite Democrats, who have been seeking additional aid to Kyiv for some time, with Republicans, who want funds to tighten control of the country’s southern border.

On Tuesday, Mr. Biden assured key allies that the United States would continue to provide military aid to Ukraine, although the White House warned that if Republicans in Congress block new funds, the flow would stop in months.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky visited Washington in September to try to convince Republicans to continue providing aid to help his country fend off a Russian invasion.

But the US is also under pressure to support its historic ally Israel, which is at war with the Islamist group Hamas. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said on Tuesday that he would push to approve an aid package for Israel in the next few weeks.

According to him, the package will include military, humanitarian, intelligence and diplomatic assistance.

On Wednesday, the Senate is also due to consider a resolution condemning Hamas and decide on the confirmation of a new ambassador to Israel.

Tensions have also risen in recent months over Taiwan, a self-governing democratic island claimed by China, which has not ruled out seizing it by force.

The official US position on this geopolitical conflict is ambiguous: the United States, which only recognizes Beijing, supplies weapons to Taiwan for its self-defense. Mr. Biden has said he would support sending U.S. forces to defend the island.

The White House did not respond to AFP requests for comment.

**Interview with Political Analyst Dr. Emily Carter on U.S. Support for Ukraine**

**Editor:** Thank you for joining us today, Dr. Carter. Let’s dive into the recent⁤ developments regarding U.S. support for Ukraine. President Biden has announced ‌a⁤ surge ⁢in security‌ assistance for Ukraine. What are the implications of this announcement, especially with the⁢ current political situation‍ in Congress?

**Dr. ‌Carter:** Thank you for ‌having me. President ⁣Biden’s announcement ⁣comes at a critical juncture. With the House of Representatives lacking a Speaker following Kevin‌ McCarthy’s ‌ousting, the landscape for securing bipartisan support ⁣for additional funding is uncertain. The proposed package aims to unify Democrats—who have been advocating for more military aid for Ukraine—and Republicans, who are more inclined to align‌ funding with border ⁣security ⁢measures.

**Editor:** Interesting. It seems like ‍Biden is trying to find ⁤common⁤ ground between both⁣ parties. How⁣ might this situation affect the speed and effectiveness of aid delivery to Ukraine?

**Dr. Carter:** That’s a pivotal point. While Biden reassured key allies about the U.S. commitment to military aid, there is a looming threat that‌ if Congress‍ is unable to act swiftly, support could dwindle in just a few months. This⁢ uncertainty‍ could hinder Ukraine’s defensive efforts and its ability to sustain momentum against Russian aggression.

**Editor:** You mentioned the need for bipartisan cooperation. Given the current discord in Congress,⁢ particularly among Republicans, do you‌ think that aid to Ukraine will remain a priority?

**Dr. Carter:** It’s a ‍balancing ⁤act for ⁤both parties. ⁢Democrats view continued support⁣ for Ukraine as crucial not only for international stability but also for maintaining U.S. credibility ‍on the world stage. On the other hand, some Republicans are concerned about the allocation of resources domestically. President Biden’s challenge will be to facilitate dialogue between factions within the party to ensure ‍a united front on this issue.

**Editor:** Ukrainian⁢ President Volodymyr Zelensky visited Washington recently to advocate for continued aid. How⁣ effective do you think these diplomatic efforts have⁣ been in persuading U.S. ‍lawmakers?

**Dr. Carter:** Zelensky’s ‍visit was significant; personal diplomacy often carries weight in political circles. His direct appeal to lawmakers serves as a ⁤reminder of ‌the human stakes⁣ involved ‌in⁣ this conflict. Nevertheless, without solid bipartisan support, those efforts can only go so far. The internal ‍dynamics within ‌the ⁤Republican Party will ‌be crucial in determining the outcome of future aid requests.

**Editor:** Thank you, Dr. ⁣Carter,⁢ for your insights on this evolving issue. ⁢It will be‌ interesting to see how these political dynamics unfold in the coming months regarding U.S. support for Ukraine.

**Dr. Carter:** My pleasure! It will certainly be a critical period to watch.
