Open enrollment season has officially commenced across California, providing an opportunity for individuals seeking health insurance. This year marks a significant milestone, as a wider swath of Californians can now gain access to essential health coverage.
Since the inception of the Covered California healthcare exchange program in 2014, nearly 6 million individuals have benefited from its services, illustrating the program’s critical role in the state’s healthcare landscape. Currently, approximately 1.8 million residents are actively enrolled, taking advantage of the available plans.
This year, thanks in part to financial support from the Inflation Reduction Act, healthcare access is poised to become increasingly affordable for Californians. Enhanced and expanded financial assistance will roll out in 2025, making it easier for people to secure necessary healthcare services.
“In California, we are maximizing the Affordable Care Act by providing greater access to coverage and quality care to more Californians,” stated California Governor Gavin Newsom in a statement. He emphasized the importance of reducing out-of-pocket expenses for millions of Californians as an essential step toward fostering a healthier state overall.
Thanks to a pivotal rule change by the Biden-Harris administration, recipients of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program are now eligible for health coverage, potentially benefiting around 40,000 individuals, as estimated by state officials.
Covered California has initiated a special enrollment period for DACA recipients starting on November 1, enabling them not only to apply for coverage in December but also to enroll for 2025.
The current open enrollment period has kicked off with a record number of enrollees and California boasting its lowest uninsured rate to date. To further enhance outreach, the state launched its “Let’s Talk Health” campaign, aimed specifically at engaging those who remain uninsured. This initiative focuses on improving health literacy, simplifying the process of securing coverage, which is a known barrier for many residents.
Open enrollment, during which Californians have the chance to sign up for, renew, or explore new health insurance plans, will continue through January 31, 2025.
