In 2023, Google said that artificial intelligence (AI) technology is the future of search.
Now it seems that the company has started implementing it. Google has introduced a feature called AI Overviews for the search engine on the occasion of the annual developer conference.
This feature is being rolled out in the US first but will soon be available to users worldwide.
According to the company, when you search for a topic through this feature, an AI-based summary will appear above the search results.
Liz Reed, head of Google Search, said that through generative AI, Google will be able to help you in other things beyond searching.
He further informed that through AI overviews, details or answers will be provided in the form of a summary along with web links about the topics.
Similarly, the company is also working on a new AI feature for Google Lens through which you will be able to search about the things inside a video.
Another tool is also being developed that will provide details of an entertainment tour or hotel meal when people ask for it.
Gemini AI model is being used by Google for search engine to transform simple search engine into AI search engine.
For this purpose, a special Gemini model for desktop users will be used to answer your queries, but this AI model will also provide search results.
According to Liz Reid, AI technology will not be used for every search.
If you want to search for a web link like Google.com, it would not be beneficial to use AI for that, he said.
He said that Gemini will be more helpful in searching for more complex searches – things that require repeated searches or that you don’t go to Google for.
Balancing everything is a challenge, explains Liz Reed, and that’s why AI over visual tools won’t work on specific topics.
But he said preliminary data suggests that this new search style is forcing people to open more web links.

**Interview with Liz Reed, Head of Google Search AI**
**Editor:** Thank you for joining us today, Liz. It’s exciting to see Google taking bold steps into the future of search with the introduction of AI Overviews. Can you explain how this new feature will enhance the user experience?
**Liz Reed:** Absolutely, and I’m thrilled to discuss it! AI Overviews are designed to provide users with concise, relevant summaries of information related to their queries, right at the top of the search results. This means that instead of sifting through multiple links, users can access key insights directly, which saves time and makes the search process more efficient.
**Editor:** That sounds incredibly helpful! What kind of information will the AI summarize, and how will it ensure accuracy in its responses?
**Liz Reed:** The AI will summarize a wide range of topics, pulling from credible sources to construct its responses. We leverage advanced natural language processing to understand the context of queries and generate summaries that are not just precise but also informative. Additionally, we continuously monitor and improve the performance of these AI systems to enhance accuracy and relevance over time.
**Editor:** As with any AI technology, there are often concerns about bias or misinformation. How is Google addressing these issues with the AI Overviews feature?
**Liz Reed:** That’s a great question. Ensuring that our AI remains fair and unbiased is a top priority for us. We have implemented several layers of checks and balances. This includes using diverse datasets to train our models, as well as ongoing audits and user feedback mechanisms to identify and rectify any potential issues with the AI’s outputs.
**Editor:** You mentioned that the feature is rolling out first in the US. When can users from other parts of the world expect to see AI Overviews?
**Liz Reed:** We are dedicated to a global rollout, and we anticipate expanding access to users worldwide within the coming months. We want to ensure that everyone benefits from this innovative search experience as soon as possible.
**Editor:** what advice would you give to content creators looking to optimize their content for this new AI feature?
**Liz Reed:** Content creators should focus on providing clear, well-structured, and credible information. This includes using appropriate keywords, offering comprehensive answers to potential questions, and ensuring that their content can be easily understood by both users and AI. Remember, the clearer and more precise the content, the better chance it has to be featured in AI Overviews.
**Editor:** Thank you, Liz, for sharing these insights! It’s clear that AI Overviews could revolutionize how we approach online search.
**Liz Reed:** Thank you for having me! We’re thrilled about the future of search and the role AI can play in making information more accessible.
