**Interview Segment: Understanding Needlefish Attacks and Ocean Safety**

**Interviewer:**⁢ Welcome to our‌ segment. ⁢Today, we are discussing a tragic event that highlights⁣ the potential dangers of marine life for surfers and swimmers.‍ Joining us is marine biologist Dr. Emily Torres, who ⁣specializes⁣ in fish behavior‍ and ocean safety.⁣ Thank you for being here, Dr. Torres.

**Dr. Torres:** Thank you for having me. It’s important to discuss these topics, especially ⁤in light of ‍recent events like‌ the attack ⁤on Giulia⁣ Manfrini.

**Interviewer:**⁤ Absolutely.‍ Can you provide insight into ‍what happened to Giulia and why needlefish can be dangerous?

**Dr. ‍Torres:** Certainly. Giulia⁤ was surfing in the Mentawai Islands, where⁣ needlefish are known to inhabit. These fish can become quite aggressive, especially when they perceive a threat ⁣or are startled. They have long, sharp beaks that can cause serious injuries, as we tragically saw in this case.

**Interviewer:**⁤ How common are attacks like this? Should surfers and swimmers really be⁣ worried?

**Dr. Torres:** Attacks by needlefish are very rare, but they can happen. Most swimmers and surfers won’t encounter them, and instances of aggressive ‌behavior are even less frequent. However, it’s crucial for people to be aware of their surroundings and practice caution in marine environments.

**Interviewer:** What⁣ precautions can surfers ⁢and swimmers take to ⁢minimize the‌ risk?

**Dr. Torres:** First, it’s ⁣important ⁤to avoid areas known for large concentrations of fish during certain times or ‌conditions. Surfing during dawn or dusk can increase the risk as⁣ fish⁤ are more active. Additionally, wearing bright colors and avoiding shiny jewelry can help reduce the likelihood of drawing attention.

**Interviewer:** It’s⁣ certainly tragic that this incident occurred. How ‌can we‌ honor Giulia’s memory and improve safety for ocean enthusiasts?

**Dr. Torres:** We can⁤ honor her by using this ⁤incident as a reminder to educate others about marine life and safety. More awareness and preparation can go a long⁢ way in preventing⁣ future tragedies. It’s also‌ essential to support research on fish behavior and interactions with humans to better understand‍ these dynamics.

**Interviewer:** Thank you, Dr. Torres, for your insights. It’s vital for our community to stay informed and safe ⁢while enjoying the ocean.

**Dr. Torres:** You’re welcome. Let’s hope for safer experiences for everyone who loves the water.

**Interviewer:** Indeed. Thank you for tuning in, and let’s continue to spread awareness about ocean safety.
