Flood victims threw mud at the Spanish royal couple

According to the news agency AP, mounted police officers were called to get control of the situation on Sunday.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez was with King Felipe and Queen Letizia during the visit to badly flooded Paiporta. There was also Carlos Mazon, the president of the autonomous region of Valencia.

It seemed that the crowd’s anger was primarily directed at Sánchez and Mazon, writes the AFP news agency. Some shouted “murderers”, while others told Mazon to withdraw.

Bodyguards opened umbrellas to protect the royal couple and politicians from the mud. The king and queen still got mud in their faces and on their clothes, reports AFP.

King Felipe retreated, but afterwards attempted to speak to residents. One of them is said to have cried on the king’s shoulder.

Prime Minister Sánchez was evacuated from the scene, according to broadcaster RTVE. The royal couple also had to end their visit earlier than planned.

After the incident, Sánchez said that while he understands the suffering of the flood victims, he condemns all forms of violence.

More than 60 people died in the flood in Paiporta, which is located just outside the city of Valencia. The total number of dead in the great flood in Spain is at least 211.
