If you are using the AirPods Pro 2 (whether it’s the model with the Lightning or USB-C charging case), you’ve updated your iPhone or iPad to the iOS/iPadOS 18.1 and your headphones for the latest firmware versions, you may have noticed that Apple has removed a button to completely disable noise reduction from these headphones.
This is directly related to the new features of hearing health AirPods Pro 2, which won’t work if you turn off Listening Mode. If you still want to disable them, here’s how to do just that!
With your AirPods Pro 2 connected to your iPhone or iPad, open Settings and tap their name (below your name). Then scroll down, check the option “Disable Listening Mode” and confirm with “OK”.
Before (left) and after (right)
With this, the button to disable noise reduction should now appear again at the top of the screen, next to the Ambient, Adaptive and Noise Cancellation mode buttons.

**Interview with Tech Expert Sarah Thompson on AirPods Noise Cancelling Features**
**Interviewer:** Welcome, Sarah! It’s great to have you here to discuss the recent changes to AirPods Pro 2 noise cancelling features.
**Sarah Thompson:** Thank you for having me! I’m excited to talk about the updates.
**Interviewer:** So, I understand that with the latest iOS/iPadOS 18.1 update, Apple has removed the button that allowed users to completely disable noise reduction on the AirPods Pro 2. What prompted this change?
**Sarah Thompson:** Yes, that’s correct. This change is tied to Apple’s new focus on hearing health features. They want to promote the use of Listening Mode, which is designed to enhance the audio experience while also protecting users’ hearing. By removing the complete noise cancellation option, Apple is encouraging users to engage more with these new features.
**Interviewer:** Interesting! For those who might still want to manage their noise cancelling settings, what are their options now?
**Sarah Thompson:** Users can still toggle between different noise control modes. By accessing the Control Center on their iPhone or iPad, they can press and hold the volume slider and then tap the Noise Control icon. This allows them to choose between Noise Cancellation, Transparency Mode, and the Adaptive Audio feature. They can also tweak these settings in the Bluetooth menu under AirPods settings.
**Interviewer:** There seems to be a push towards integrating health and audio technology. What does this mean for the future of small tech devices like AirPods?
**Sarah Thompson:** Absolutely, we’re seeing a significant trend toward convergence in tech—especially with health. It’s likely that future iterations of products like AirPods will continue to incorporate features that not only enhance audio quality but also monitor and protect users’ hearing health. This aligns with broader health and wellness trends we’re observing in technology development.
**Interviewer:** Thanks for your insights, Sarah! It sounds like a fascinating time in tech, especially for wearable devices.
**Sarah Thompson:** It really is! I look forward to seeing how these technologies evolve to enhance our daily lives even further. Thank you for having me!
