Gödöllő SK vs Dorogi FC: A Tale of Tenacity and Triumphs
Well, folks, gather ‘round because we’ve got a juicy scoop from the realms of Hungarian football, where dreams are made, and sometimes, as we all know, broken—much like my hopes of becoming a stand-up comedian in a room full of folks with no sense of humor!
In a riveting display of athletic prowess and competitive spirit, Gödöllő SK—yes, the wise old sage with a respectable 110-year history—faced off against the feisty Dorogi FC in the fourth round of the 2024/2025 MOL Hungarian Cup. It’s like a granddad versus a cheeky teenager! And just to make things proper exciting, they had to pack their bags and head over to MTK Budapest’s swanky Sándor Károly Football Academy because their home ground was about as usable as a chocolate teapot. Spoiler alert: it was a thrilling ride!
Now, let’s talk about the stakes here! Gödöllő, not just happy with a seat at the big kids’ table, was eager to bag a spot among the two best teams that aren’t quite on the “NB” train yet. They were dreaming of glory in the Amateur Cup—yes, the Cup formerly known as the Free Land Cup—while also hoping to clinch some respectable bragging rights along the way. Not to mention, they were sitting comfortably with the best progress figures among their peers. Talk about being the teacher’s pet!
The match began, and what do you know? Gödöllő, usually known for their zest in attacking football, found themselves under the cosh a bit. But fear not, ladies and gentlemen, because they were ready to build some dangerous attacks, putting the Dorogi FC defense under pressure like a dentist’s chair on a first-timer. Our hero for the day, Ábel Mertse, decided it was time to put his name in the history books by slinking past his slower opponent and drilling a fine shot into the bottom right corner of the Dorog goal. Oh, the audacity of it all!
Then, the drama unfolded, like a telenovela but with more yellow cards. Dorog had a controversial penalty claim that went swishing past the referee’s ears—a bit like my jokes sometimes. They missed the chance, chaos ensued, and meanwhile, Gödöllő’s Richárd Koziorowski picked up a second yellow card faster than I can order takeaway. The new game plan was in full effect like an overpriced coffee shop menu!
Dramatic turn of events: the game was balanced on a knife-edge. It was anyone’s match, and in a dramatic second half, Dorogi FC upped the ante. Ádám Vígh, who clearly had his espresso that morning, headed in a peach of a goal. You could hear the gasps echoing through the crowd—“Did he just do that?!”. Yes, he did, and Gödöllő’s unbeaten streak shattered like my New Year’s resolutions.
The match ended 2-1 in favor of Dorogi FC, and despite the loss, Gödöllő SK would walk away with their heads held high, ready for the next big challenge—an upcoming showdown against Tarpa in the Amateur Cup final. And who could blame them? It’s all about the journey and the sheer thrill of the game. Besides, losing builds character, right?
So what’s next for Gödöllő SK? They’re set to take on Pomáz-ICO SE on November 3rd, and let’s just say the stakes couldn’t be higher. Will they bounce back stronger than ever or is it back to the drawing board? Place your bets wisely, my friends!
And that’s the football roundup for you! Catch the goal highlights here! Stay tuned for more shenanigans from the world of sport because, after all, if you don’t laugh at life, what’s the point? Unless, of course, you’re watching Jimmy Carr—then it’s all about the agony at the hilarious cost!
In the fourth round of the 2024/2025 season of the MOL Hungarian Cup, which decides whether to reach the top 16 teams (round of 16), the team of Gödöllő SK, founded 110 years ago, is now the NB III. Dorogi FC (11th place), interested in the North-West group, received – due to the unusability of the Táncsics Mihály út playing field – the MTK Budapest Sándor Károly Football Academy’s center field in the capital.
Based on the current balance of power, in addition to the advancement that brings glory to both sides, the Gödöllő company also fought to get into the two best non-NB qualified squads and to participate in the competition series named the Amateur Cup (formerly the Free Land Cup) ten years ago at the end of April , in the final at the Hidegkuti stadium. In addition, this Gödöllő aspiration could have been achieved even in the event of elimination, since our city’s crew has the best progress figures among the three rivals (GSK, Tarpa, Balatonalmádi) (3 wins in regular time). We can also say that if all three county teams are eliminated, Gödöllő – Tarpa final will be held in the Amateur Cup.
After such antecedents, it was not particularly surprising that the defensive line of the Gödöllő team, which usually prefers attacking football, faces a greater load. However, after about 10 minutes, it was possible to perceive that the home guard – primarily thanks to its left wing – is also capable of building dangerous attacks: after Gergő Czakó, Ábel Mertse could have scored a goal as well. The conditional mode became a reality in the 19th minute, after Ábel Mertse, after a long solo, shook off his slower defender, team captain Tamás Lénárth, and fired a shot into the lower right corner of the Dorog goal. In the 23rd minute, the Dorogians called the referee for a disputed penalty, and then missed a chance. In the 26th minute, Richárd Koziorowski collected his second yellow card, thereby reducing the Gödöllő eleven.
The new situation required new tactics. This worked well for a while, so much so that Gergő László, who was fighting with Máté Ferkó not long before, almost hit the top left corner of the visitors’ goal in the 45th minute. In the second minute of extra time, Dorog equalized after Máté Németh pushed the ball onto the post after a shot, which bounced in front of Gula Boldizsár, who was standing nearby, and slapped the puck into the net from a few steps away.
The second half, among others, also gave an answer to which guard is in what state of fitness. The Gödöllő players, playing with a man disadvantage, expected the continuation from a less favorable position from this point of view, but they could hope that the rear formation of the Dorogians might make a mistake. At the beginning of the half, the guests seized the initiative, but in the 56th minute, after Donát Reznek’s free kick, the goalkeeper of Dorog, Bálint Tímár, needed a feat, who managed to get the leather ball out from under the crossbar.
In the 62nd minute, Dorogi’s superiority led to a goal: Ádám Vígh, who came on as a substitute, headed in a pass from the right side, and the ball went undefended into the Gödöllő goal. In the remaining game time, there were – at least – attempts that were nipped in the bud on both sides, but no more goals were scored, so the Gödöllői SK team, which lost its 249-day streak of unbeaten matches, – let’s add – said goodbye to the MOL Hungarian Cup with their heads held high…
…and you can prepare for the Amateur Cup final against Tarpa (Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County Division I).
