SINGER Shawn Mendes appears to touch on the sensitive issue of sexuality in his new song, “The Mountain”. The song will later be part of the self-titled album which is scheduled for release on November 15.

On his ongoing For Friends and Family Tour, Mendes performed the song, giving an in-depth look at his perspective on the speculation surrounding it.

In his performance, Mendes sang lyrics that spoke directly to the public: “Sometimes, I change my mind / You can say what you need to say. You can say I’m too young / You can say I’m too old / You can say I like girls or boys / Whatever suits your fancy.” Through these lyrics, he shows how complicated other people’s perceptions of his sexual orientation are, which continues to be a topic of discussion.

As a widely known artist, Mendes has been in relationships with several famous figures, including Camila Cabello and more recently Sabrina Carpenter. However, he also does not shy away from the debate that often arises around his identity. In an episode of the Armchair Expert podcast in 2020, Mendes expressed his frustration with the rumors circulating.

“It was very, very frustrating for me because there were some people in my life who were very, very close to me, who were gay and closeted,” he said, referring to his close friends who were also facing difficulties with their sexual identity.

Mendes’ statement reflects the dilemma many people face in today’s society: the desire to be honest while dealing with other people’s expectations. He emphasized that he does not identify as gay, he understands and respects those in the community.

“And I felt so angry towards those people. This is a very complicated thing. You want to say, ‘I’m not gay, but it’s okay if I am but there’s also nothing wrong with being gay, but I’m not gay.’ You don’t really know how to respond to the situation.”

With this, the Stitches singer feels that he is not alone, there are many men out there who feel the same way. Mendas also said; “I’d like to say I don’t care about it, but that’s not true,”

With “The Mountain,” Mendes not only delivers evocative music, but also creates space for a broader conversation about identity and acceptance. (People/Z-3)
