Cerebras Systems, established in 2016, has been generating considerable buzz in the AI industry, with an IPO on the horizon. The foundational principle driving Cerebras is the belief that “AI is the most transformative technology of our generation.”
Cerebras has pioneered a revolutionary product known as the Wafer-Scale Engine (WSE) — a colossal semiconductor that represents a fundamentally different methodology in the acceleration of AI technologies. The WSE is an engineering marvel, featuring an astounding 4 trillion transistors and seamlessly embedding 900,000 compute cores along with 44 gigabytes of Static Random Access Memory (SRAM) directly into the chip.
According to Cerebras, this innovative architecture significantly minimizes latency — the delay caused by data transmission — allowing the third-generation WSE to be touted as “the world’s fastest commercially available AI training and inference solution.” In August, Cerebras unveiled what it declared to be “the world’s fastest AI inference,” boasting capabilities that are alleged to be 20 times quicker than Nvidia’s GPU-based solutions, all at a fraction of the cost.

While Nvidia remains tight-lipped about the identities of these major clients, they are widely speculated to include Alphabet, Amazon, Meta Platforms, and Microsoft.
Conversely, Cerebras relies heavily on a single customer for a staggering 83% of its 2023 revenue — G42 in the United Arab Emirates, which accounted for 87% of its sales in the first half of this year. Any shifts in the partnership or disputes between these two could severely jeopardize Cerebras’ viability, leaving its relatively few other customers in a precarious situation.
Compounding these challenges are growing concerns from U.S. lawmakers regarding G42’s connections, with particular attention drawn to the company’s “extensive business relationships with Chinese military companies, state-owned entities, and the PRC [People’s Republic of China] intelligence services.” These relations might hinder Cerebras’ ability to cultivate new business with G42, potentially stalling its future opportunities.
Cerebras certainly offers a unique solution that suggests a new level of competition for Nvidia—something previous rivals have struggled to deliver. Nonetheless, the company faces numerous obstacles that it must overcome to pose a significant challenge to the industry leader, Nvidia.
To ascertain its potential, Cerebras’ claims must withstand rigorous testing. Ultimately, the true catalyst for Cerebras’ ability to compete with Nvidia will hinge on customer demand and confidence in its offerings.
Until that demand manifests, however, Nvidia continues to reign supreme in the AI revolution, commanding a market valuation that is presently around 34 times next year’s anticipated sales.
