Invoice Scandals and Billionaire Shenanigans: A Dark Comedy in Hungary
Well, folks, if you thought corporate scandals were just an American pastime, think again! Dániel Jellinek, Hungary’s seventh richest—yes, seventh! A real overachiever—finds himself tangled up in a juicy invoice manufacturing mess. You know it’s serious when the prosecutor’s office gets involved; this isn’t just your average Tuesday afternoon. We’re talking a scandal of epic proportions.
The Scene of the Crime
Picture this: the Győr-Moson-Sopron County Prosecutor’s Office has opened one of the biggest invoice factory cases you’ve ever witnessed. Four and a half billion forints were reportedly vaporized into thin air! That’s like running a marathon without leaving your couch. And who’s at the center of this whirlwind? Jellinek and his family business, Indotek Group. Yes, that’s right. Even granddad’s in the mix—at 74, you’d think he’d have retired to a nice wooden rocking chair, sipping coffee, not rolling out fictitious invoices.
The Call of Duty: Family First!
Now let’s get to Dániel’s response, which is quite the Oscar-worthy performance. “I did what any responsible company owner would do!” he exclaimed, taking the blame to ensure that his elderly father and a colleague wouldn’t be “dragged away innocently.” I mean, who doesn’t love a good father-son bonding moment over a bit of white-collar crime? Yet you’ve got to admire the commitment to family values. Forget the holidays—nothing says family like tax evasion!
Self-Inspections: The New Trend?
According to the indictment, two companies under Jellinek’s banner caused damages amounting to approximately HUF 52 and 53 million respectively. That’s a whole lot of ‘whoopsies!’ But fear not, our billionaire hero came to the rescue with a self-inspection! Because, you see, once things hit the fan, apparently every company conducts a self-audit as casually as one would pick up groceries. “Oh dear, we forgot to pay taxes… Let’s just correct that!” Who knew accounting was so forgiving?
Update: The Apology Tour
Update:
Once the chips fell, the Indotek group had to churn out their version of events, and boy did they deliver. Jellinek stated, “We received the official notification that the prosecutor’s office amended the charges after I clarified the actions attributed to my father and my colleague.” Isn’t it just like a sitcom? Let’s introduce a new performance control system for the company, because nothing screams “We are totally on top of our game!” like installing a shiny new control system after the damage has already been done.
The Grand Finale?
So, will Jellinek and his clan emerge from this mess unscathed, or will the comedy of errors lead to more than just a slap on the wrist? His claims that neither the state nor the budget was harmed might fly about as well as a lead balloon. As the situation develops, let’s buckle up for the next episode in this unexpected soap opera. If laughter is the best medicine, then this financial fiasco certainly delivers a hearty dose!

Dániel Jellinek, who ranks seventh on the list of the richest Hungarians, can be charged by the prosecutor’s office in an invoice manufacturing case – was informed by 24.hu.
In February, the Győr-Moson-Sopron County Prosecutor’s Office brought charges in one of the biggest invoice factory scandals in recent years. According to the prosecutor’s office document obtained by the newspaper, the case caused four and a half billion forints in damage to the budget and there are fifty defendants. Two companies of the Indotek Group, owned by Dániel Jellinek, were also able to receive fictitious invoices from the invoice company, one of which is managed by the businessman’s 74-year-old father. According to 24.hu, the billionaire had previously taken responsibility for the crimes charged against his father and his colleague, so the prosecution initiated the amendment of the charge at the Győr Court. In response to their interest, Dániel Jellinek previously wrote: “I did what is expected of all company managers, owners and people who take responsibility for their parents in such a situation, I took it upon myself to ensure that my elderly father and my colleague were not dragged away innocently.”
According to the indictment, two companies belonging to Indotek caused HUF 52 and 53 million damage to the budget, respectively. However, based on the contents of the indictment, the two companies carried out self-inspections after the start of the proceedings, as a result of which they reported an increase in liabilities and fully reimbursed the financial disadvantage caused.
Update:
After the publication of the article, the Indotek group also shared with our newspaper the statement of Dániel Jellinek, according to which: “We received the official notification that the prosecutor’s office amended the charges after I clarified the actions attributed to my father and my colleague, naturally accepting all the consequences involved. In the case of the invoices in question, we carried out a self-audit a year before the NAV investigation, in November 2021, and paid the related deducted taxes with their interest, so neither the state nor the budget was harmed. Self-revision is a completely everyday procedure at companies, if someone subsequently corrects his return himself and pays the supplement. In addition, having learned the lessons of the case, we introduced a new, stricter performance control system for the entire company group so that similar situations can be avoided in the future.”
