The sixth generation of wireless communications technology (6G) promises to “unlock” a new era of connectivity and digital experiences in areas such as entertainment, education, healthcare and commerce.
In this context, the research team SMARTECH of the Institute of Industrial Systems (INVIS) of the “Athina” Research Center, under the guidance of Professor Christos Verykoukis, leads the flagship project SUNRISE-6G within the framework of the European program Smart Networks Systems-Joint Undertaking.
Target is the creation of the first pan-European infrastructure for 6G wireless networks, bringing together 14 test platforms from different research groups in Europe to develop future vertical applications. The SUNRISE-6G project is a consortium of 28 partners from 12 member states of the European Union, with a total budget of 13 million euros. INVIS will create the central platform that will allow researchers from all over the world to access unique technological solutions.
The Institute has gathered the 7 most important operators of the Greek 6th generation network ecosystem, including the Hellenic Telecommunications Organization, the INTRACOMof its Greek section JUNIPERof EKEFE Demokritos, and the University of Thessaly, as well as small and medium-sized companies FOCUS and INFOLYSISthus strengthening Greece’s position in the development of the next generation of wireless networks.
The SMARTECH research team leads the way in the development of 6G technologies and has ensured funding from European research projects, with a total budget of more than 8 million euros the last three years.
The specific projects, will turn INVIS and Patras into a pan-European center for 6G technologiesas their implementation, coordination and cooperation with large industrial bodies, telecommunications and cloud computing bodies, high-tech media and recognized Research centers and Universities have already begun.
Professor Verykoukis leads many projects, coordinating joint ventures with global industry giants such as Ericsson, NOKIA, SIEMENS, AIRBUS and IBM. At the same time, it strengthens the cooperation with Greek industrial partners, such as OTE, INTRACOM, SPACE-HELLAS, NOVA and SATWAYS, contributing to the development of an innovative “ecosystem”.
The INVIS as a leading Research & Development Institute of Excellence conducts basic information and communication technology (ICT) research for Greek and European industry. Since its foundation, IN.VIS. has successfully participated in more than 100 national, regional and European research projects. In this context, he has collaborated with major academic institutions, research centers, organizations and businesses, addressing the major challenges of industry, technology and society.
