At the Iván de Bedout Coliseum, the final stages of the second edition of the WBL of the Americas will take place:
4:30 pm Phoenix of the United States vs. Sportiva Italiana of Chile
7:00 pm Indeportes Antioquia vs. Unión Florida of Argentina
The current champions are, precisely, the Antioquia quintet of Indeportes, who for this tournament were reinforced with Mabel Martínez, MVP of the last and only edition of the competition that was held in the municipality of Rionegro and in which, the Antioquias defeated a team from Uruguay. In addition, Diana Prens, who plays in the post position and has been part of the Colombian National Team, also made up the department’s squad.
Prior to the final phase, the continental squads were divided into two zones (south and north). The southern zone was made up of Ferro, Unión Florida, Sportiva Italiana, Monarca de Chile and Malvín.
And, in the northern zone, there were the Bay Area Phoenix, Indeportes Antioquia, Salvadoreñas and Pioneras de Delicias de México teams.
According to official FIBA statistics, “Unión Florida’s bench averages 36.0 points per game and doubles the production of Antioquia’s substitutes (16.0). That gap could be reduced with the addition of Mabel Martínez because Daihana Murillo (5.7 PTS) could now come in with the second unit. If the locals manage to match that aspect, their chances will increase.”
On the other hand, Antioquia coach Luis Cuenca acknowledged that it will be a complex and challenging semifinal: «We hope that the team will be competitive with the two new addictions. We have analyzed the rest of the rivals, we know that the Argentine team is doing very well. It is a team with a lot of rhythm and dynamics. We will surely see a very even and entertaining competition between the four teams that are in this instance.”
