A Warm and Cheeky Tribute to Those Who Care
So here we are, folks. Gather ‘round as we dive into the touching stories from the brave souls receiving support at the San Leopoldo Mandic Hospital in Merate. Yes, I know, it sounds like somewhere you’d go for a delightful charcuterie board rather than rehabilitation, but trust me, the real treasures here are the healthcare professionals. They’re not just people in lab coats; they’re practically superheroes in scrubs!
Meet the Heroes of Recovery
First up, we have Luigi Veschetti. This chap’s hit life hard last summer when he had a stroke. After some quality time at another hospital, he decided to try his luck at Mandic and, shocker—he found the place full of “competence and humanity”. He said it himself! Who knew healthcare could come with a side of genuine compassion? Not a bad deal!
Then we have Angelo Agazzi, your local Bergamasco. He suffered a stroke too, but instead of wallowing in self-pity (which we all know is a slippery slope to binge-watching terrible reality TV), he woke up ready for action at Mandic. He accused the staff of treating him like family, and honestly, if you’re going to have a stroke, you might as well have a family reunion while you’re at it, right?
Feeling the Love
Next up is Anna Comma. This lady experienced the joy of an ischemia that left her leg and arm saying, “No thanks!” to functionality. But don’t worry! The team at Mandic played the role of fairy godmothers, providing all the “professional and affectionate care” that left her feeling like a million bucks. I mean, let’s be honest, who wouldn’t want to be cared for by angels in hospital gowns?
Lastly, we have Bianca Castelli, who, while recovering from knee surgery, made the great plunge to switch wards and found herself celebrating her “better choice”. This is literally the age-old advice of “go with your gut”—or in her case, her knee. Who knew rehab could be a matchmaking service for patients and nurses?
Gratitude Central!
As if this happy choir of praise wasn’t enough, the four of them decided to really top it off by putting together a heartfelt roster of thank-yous. And boy, was it a long list! From doctors to nurses, each one getting their fair share of appreciation because, let’s be real, they deserve a medal for dealing with all the shenanigans!
As for our quartet, “Our thanks are not enough for everything they are doing,” they concluded. Well, that’s one way to keep those solicitors from contacting them! You’ve got to admire the understated appreciation they showed here.
The Big Takeaway
In the end, this gathering of testimonies illustrates something quite remarkable: that behind the clinical façades, there’s something really human and profoundly reassuring—a caring spirit among those who are there to help. So, if you’re ever in the unfortunate position of needing rehabilitation, do think of San Leopoldo Mandic. They might even turn your recovery into a feel-good story you can share over dinner!
In closing, let’s raise a glass—of recovery smoothies, of course—to all the healthcare workers who go beyond the textbook, and to patients who choose to find the silver lining in their hospital stay. Cheers!

Different stories, each revealing a tapestry of resilience, are bound by a shared determination to express gratitude towards those professionals who have provided essential support throughout their challenging journeys. These individuals embody a blend of expertise and genuine humanity.
Following the heartfelt commendation issued by Luigi Veschetti, a Milanese entrepreneur actively involved in Barzanò, three other patients from the Specialist Rehabilitation department at the San Leopoldo Mandic Hospital in Merate have come forward to share their profoundly positive experiences within the facility’s warm embrace.
In this haven of rehabilitation, a synergy of professionalism and compassion has proven to be an invaluable asset to all four patients.
”All the doctors followed us, giving us hope and the strength to move forward, without giving us false illusions,” stated Veschetti, who endured a stroke last summer. He spent an initial recovery period at the Manzoni Hospital in Lecco before recently beginning his orthopedic and neurological rehabilitation at Mandic. Although his path to recovery is still laden with challenges, he feels that each day brings him closer to regaining his health.
Reflecting on a similar ordeal, Angelo Agazzi, hailing from the quaint Bergamasco town of Torre Boldone, recounted the harrowing night of August 16-17 when he suffered a cerebral stroke. His journey led him through various facilities until he arrived at Mandic, where he eventually started his rehabilitation process.
“I will be discharged on November 11th, almost three months after that illness that turned my life upside down,” Agazzi shared. He emphasized the respect and familial atmosphere he experienced during his stay, highlighting the attentive, smiling faces of the entire staff. “It feels like home and it’s really a shame that this hospital is spoken badly of or that it might even be weakened,” he added passionately.
Echoing these sentiments, Anna Comma, a retired resident of Brivio, described her experience after being admitted for rehabilitation following an ischemic event that impacted her leg and arm. “I receive very attentive and professional care from all the staff: they are also friendly and affectionate, without neglecting the human aspect which is important in this experience,” Comma remarked.
Also, Bianca Castelli from Olgiate shared her appreciation for the staff after undergoing knee surgery with Dr. Pierluigi Colombo. Delighted with her decision to continue her rehabilitation at Mandic, she found a supportive community among both the staff and fellow patients.
These four patients have collectively decided to formally thank the dedicated individuals ensuring the smooth operation of the specialist rehabilitation department. They listed names of the professionals, including doctors like Pietro Tavani, Tommaso Sellaroli, and Maresa Dozio, as well as an extensive team of nurses and physiotherapists.
”Our thanks are not enough for everything they are doing,” concluded Veschetti, Agazzi, Castelli, and Comma, highlighting the significant impact the Mandic staff has had on their recovery journeys.
Hospitals before arriving at Mandic, where he experienced a transformative recovery process. “The staff treated me like family, making a tough situation much more bearable. It was like I had an extended family cheering me on,” said Agazzi.
