Claudia Sheinbaum defends the Army after a deadly operation in Sinaloa

MEXICO CITY.- This Thursday, during its usual morning conference, the president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardodefended the actions of the Mexican Army during a operation that left 19 dead in Sinaloaa state that faces a wave of violence for one internal drug trafficking struggle.

The president asserted that the military “responded within the framework of the law” in the operation that led to the arrest of Edwin Antonioalias El Max, alleged leader of a criminal cell linked to the faction of Ismael ‘El Mayo’ Zambadaco-founder of Sinaloa Cartel arrested on July 25 in the United States.

The Mexican leader maintained that “it was an arrest where there was aggression against the federal Armed Forces and, in this case, they responded.”

“When the Armed Forces, be it the National Guard, be it the Navy, be it the Army, are attacked, then, within the framework of the law, they have the right to respond within the framework of self-defense,” he declared.

Violence unleashed in Sinaloa

The fact, reported by the Secretary of National Defense (Sedena) on Tuesday, reflects two controversies that have marked the first month of Claudia Sheinbaum’s presidency.

The first is the violence unleashed in Sinaloawhich has accumulated more than 200 homicides since the internal struggle of the homonymous cartel began on September 9 because Joaquín Guzmán López, son of Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán, handed Zambada over to the United States.

The second are the growing public security tasks of the militarywho this month have killed migrants in Chiapasin the south of Mexico, and a girl and a nurse in Tamaulipas, in the north of the country.

Claudia Sheinbaum asserted that the Armed Forces act with adherence to human rightsquestioned by the controversy that arose on Wednesday after a video was revealed in which about a dozen elements of the National Guard and the Army almost killed an innocent young man in Sinaloa.

“The instruction we have given, and it is the policy and strategy of the Security Cabinet, is that there be no confrontations, we are not going to return to the ‘war on drugs’, it is not to arrive in a framework outside the rights of “Humans and the law go so far as to attack and kill a person,” he responded.
