So far this year, the government of Nicolás Maduro has confirmed the arrest of several foreign citizens in Venezuela for an alleged plot to destabilize the country.
One of the most recent announcements was made on October 18 by Diosdado Cabello, Minister of the Interior, Justice and Peace, who confirmed the arrest of 19 American citizens, one Peruvian and one Lebanese, in a period of four weeks.
Cabello called the foreigners “mercenaries” and stated that they were linked to the US Central Intelligence Agency, the US Drug Administration (DEA) and the National Intelligence Center (CNI) of Spain.
In addition to this, the minister assured that the opposition leader María Corina Machado, the former president of Colombia Álvaro Uribe and the Venezuelan leader Julio Borges would be aware of the alleged plans to “destabilize” the country.
During the press conference, Diosdado Cabello confirmed the names of some of the detainees, who were identified as Gregory David Weber, David Gutenberg Guillaume, Jonathan Pagan González, and Jorge Marcelo Vargas (with American and Bolivian nationality).
The official indicated that the detainees were charged with hacking state institutions, attempting to attack Nicolás Maduro and other Venezuelan officials. Likewise, it was learned that in the capture operation they found 500 firearms, which were supposedly supplied from the USA.
In addition to these arrests, three other US citizens, two Spaniards and a Czech were captured on September 14, 2024. On that occasion, those captured with US nationality were identified as Wilbert Josep Castañeda, David Estrella and Aaron Barren Logan.
