Permanent lockout of the club that served alcohol to students

The definitive lock on the club on Vouliagmeni Avenue who served alcohol to students the mayor of Athens proposes to today’s municipal council, Harry Doukas.

Alcohol consumption by minors is a “scourge”, the dangers of “bomb” drinks

“We have a Municipal Council and as an emergency, I propose to the Authority the definitive revocation of the license of this particular bar, off the agenda. There is a related suggestion. We can do it. We want it to be a unanimous decision and then proceed immediately to the sealing,” stressed the mayor of Athens, speaking to ERT and added:

“There is an indictment, there is a case file. We studied all of this from Saturday until yesterday and prepared a proposal, which has this possibility: based on the law and all relevant provisions, to be able, based on the case file that was formed, to recommend the definitive revocation of the license”, while then he explained that the Municipality gives permits, does not control, does not have under its responsibility the story that has to do with alcoholic beverages, but mainly has to do with noise pollution and table seats.

“There is a case file, there is an indictment. Based on these, we moved and proceeded with the specific proposal and immediately after that we will proceed with the sealing”.

The Athens traffic signal officer stated that there were no official complaints about “bombs” drinks at this particular store in the 8-9 months he has been mayor.

“I have to say that 300 people, that many schools to be in a pub on a Saturday night, it all shows a very big mess and I think legislative intervention is needed. Because what business do 300 people and so many schools have in a store that has alcohol on the tables? It is a risk exposure for minors.”

Finally, Mr. Doukas informed that the license will be officially sealed and definitively revoked.

**Interview‌ with Mayor ⁢Harry Doukas of Athens on Alcohol Licensing for Minors**

**Interviewer:** Good afternoon, Mayor Doukas. Thank you for joining us today. You recently ⁤proposed⁢ to ⁢the ‌municipal council the definitive revocation of a bar’s license on Vouliagmeni Avenue for ‍serving alcohol ⁣to students. ⁢Can you elaborate on why this action was deemed necessary?

**Mayor Doukas:** Good⁣ afternoon, and thank you for having me. Serving alcohol to minors is a ‌serious issue we cannot overlook. ⁤It is a “scourge” that endangers the health and safety ⁣of our youth. The consumption of so-called “bomb” drinks, which can ‍lead to ⁤dangerous intoxication, is particularly alarming. As a municipality, we have a ⁤duty to protect our community, and this bar’s actions⁣ were directly violating that responsibility.

**Interviewer:** ‌In your statement, you mentioned an indictment and a case file. Could you provide ⁣us with ⁤more details about ‌the legal steps taken against this establishment?

**Mayor Doukas:** Certainly. Since last Saturday,⁣ we have been thoroughly reviewing the evidence compiled in the case file. We have‌ solid grounds to recommend the revocation of this bar’s license based on the legal ⁢provisions we⁣ have at our disposal. Our aim is to facilitate a unanimous decision that will allow ⁢us to seal the bar⁢ as soon as possible.

**Interviewer:** You mentioned that the municipality issues permits ⁢but does not control ‍bar operations. How will this situation address that gap in oversight?

**Mayor‌ Doukas:** This situation highlights the necessity for stronger‌ oversight and accountability ‍when it comes to alcohol⁢ licensing. While we issue permits, we need to⁣ work ⁤closely with law enforcement and community organizations to⁤ ensure compliance with the law. Going forward, we will be advocating for more⁣ robust measures to monitor and regulate alcohol sales, especially to minors.

**Interviewer:** What message do you⁤ hope this decision will send to other establishments regarding alcohol service policies?

**Mayor Doukas:** Our message is clear: We will not tolerate violations of the law that endanger our youth.‌ Establishments that prioritize profit over the well-being of our community will face consequences. We hope this serves as a wake-up call to other bars and restaurants to adhere strictly to the laws regarding alcohol service, particularly when it‌ comes to‌ minors.

**Interviewer:** ‌Thank you, Mayor Doukas, for your insights and commitment to public safety.

**Mayor Doukas:**⁣ Thank you for⁣ having me. Together, ‌we can create a‌ safer⁣ environment for everyone in our city.
