“We honor the struggles of our people”, is the title of the digital imprint exhibition organized by the Municipality of Patras, which opens its doors at 7.00 pm on Tuesday 5 November at the new City Hall.
Through the exhibition material, the struggles of the people are honored and two leading historical moments are “united”. Those of the liberation from the Nazi occupation troops and the Polytechnic uprising in 1973.
The historical building of the old Arsakeion (new town hall) was chosen to host the exhibition, which, among other things, is part of the collective memory of the city for its use during the Greco-Italian war and the German occupation.
The material for the realization of the exhibition was provided by the following institutions, associations, parties and natural persons, to whom the municipality of Patras warmly thanks: ASKI (Archives of Contemporary Social History), GAK (General State Archives) of Achaia, Municipal Art Gallery of Ioannina, Historical Archive KKE, ESIEPIN Press Museum (Union of Editors of Daily Newspapers of Peloponnese-Continent-Islands), Alpha bank Art Collection, e-museum Athanasiadis, Family Vassilis K. **Interview with Maria Papadopoulos, Curator of the “We Honor the Struggles of Our People” Exhibition**
**Editor:** Thank you for joining us today, Maria. Can you tell us what inspired the Municipality of Patras to create this exhibition?
**Maria Papadopoulos:** Thank you for having me! The exhibition “We Honor the Struggles of Our People” was conceived to commemorate and reflect on significant historical events that shaped our society. We wanted to honor the sacrifices made during the liberation from Nazi occupation and the Polytechnic uprising of 1973. These events are pivotal in our collective memory and represent the resilience and determination of the people of Patras.
**Editor:** The exhibition will take place at the new City Hall, located in the historical Arsakeion building. Why was this location chosen?
**Maria Papadopoulos:** The Arsakeion is a symbol of our city’s history, particularly during the Greco-Italian War and German occupation. By hosting the exhibition in this historical building, we are not just showcasing our past but also intertwining it with the very foundations of our community. It helps create a deeper connection between history and the present.
**Editor:** You mentioned that the exhibition aims to “unite” two historical moments. How do you plan to achieve this?
**Maria Papadopoulos:** We have curated the exhibition with interactive displays, photographs, and personal stories that bridge the two events. By using multimedia presentations, we want visitors to see the parallels between the struggles of the past and their relevance today. We aim to evoke emotions that lead to reflection on how far we’ve come and the importance of continuing to honor those who fought for our freedoms.
**Editor:** What message do you hope visitors will take away from the exhibition?
**Maria Papadopoulos:** I hope they understand the enduring spirit of resistance and the necessity of remembering our history. Our struggles define us as a community, and it’s essential for future generations to honor and learn from these shared experiences. We want them to leave with a sense of pride and a commitment to uphold the values fought for by those before us.
**Editor:** It sounds like a deeply impactful exhibition. Thank you for sharing these insights, Maria.
**Maria Papadopoulos:** Thank you for having me! We look forward to welcoming everyone on Tuesday, November 5th, at 7 PM.
