Angelo Ferrari Shares Impressions of Iowa Wrestling Ahead of Freshman Season

IOWA CITY — On Halloween day, just two days before the highly anticipated season-opening dual against Oregon State, Hawkeye wrestling held a media day that allowed fans and media members to gather insights from the team. The event set the stage for a renewed wrestling season filled with expectations and excitement.

With the dual match against Oregon State approaching (set for Saturday at 9 p.m. CT on Flowrestling), the Hawkeyes shared their first probable lineups. This news provides fans with crucial details regarding weight changes and key matchups that are likely to influence the upcoming season.

Nelson Brands, Gabe Arnold to start at 174 and 184 … for now

The competition for the starting spots at 174 and 184 pounds has been a hot topic of discussion among fans and analysts alike. Iowa boasts a talented roster with Brands, Arnold, Patrick Kennedy, and Angelo Ferrari, all of whom have the credentials to contribute significantly to the lineup.

As it stands, Nelson Brands will be the starter at 174 pounds, while Gabe Arnold is projected to compete at 184 for the dual against Oregon State. This initial lineup indicates a strategic choice, but changes are still very much a possibility as the season evolves.

William Kennedy, fresh from a demanding U23 World Championships just days prior, has not yet returned to full wrestling mode, paving the way for Brands and Arnold’s current placements. Last season, Arnold made his debut against Oregon State at 184 before opting to redshirt, expressing that 174 pounds was his optimal weight class. Additionally, Brands boasts All-American status at 184 pounds, providing credibility to the team’s decision.

The anticipated lineup by March may indeed feature Brands and Arnold firmly in their respective roles, potentially leaving Kennedy and Ferrari on the sidelines. Nonetheless, both Kennedy and Ferrari are pushing for spots, with the season likely presenting opportunities to experiment with different weight classes among these four talented wrestlers.

“We love all four of those guys, and there’s nothing wrong with sorting things out amongst friends,” Iowa’s head coach Tom Brands mentioned, emphasizing the healthy nature of their competition. “How’s that? We love the competition.”

Arnold echoed this sentiment, confidently stating, “Things are going to fall in line the way they are supposed to.”

Several Hawkeyes set to make debuts, including the transfers

This year’s Hawkeye lineup presents a blend of familiarity and fresh talent. Among the 11 potential starters, eight athletes were part of last year’s roster. However, only Michael Caliendo returns at the same weight class he previously held.

Kale Petersen will transition to the 125-pound class, stepping into the role vacated by Drake Ayala, who has moved up to 133 pounds. Petersen is expected to find stiff competition from newcomer Joey Cruz, who has made a significant impression on the coaching staff. Furthermore, Ryder Block, returning from an injury that sidelined him last year, is poised to make his debut at 141 pounds.

Nelson Brands is back in action at 174 pounds after missing last season, while Arnold and Ben Kueter emerge following their redshirt campaigns. Coach Tom Brands ensures that weight classes do not overshadow individual talent, emphasizing the potential benefits of athletes moving weights based on their capabilities.

Tom Brands reflected on historical precedents, recalling how former Hawkeye Royce Alger redefined expectations by changing weight classes his senior year, leading him to become a two-time national champion.

To add to this dynamic, transfers Kyle Parco, Jacori Teemer, and Stephen Buchanan will all compete in the Oregon State dual. Familiar faces in the wrestling community, these All-Americans are eager to make their mark under the Iowa banner while navigating a new environment. Buchanan highlighted how even the increased traffic in the area reminded him how fresh this experience is, not only for the fans but for many team members as well.

Brands views this influx of new perspectives as an opportunity to invigorate the Hawkeyes’ performance. Initially, Iowa has set its sights on reclaiming its place in the title race after finishing fifth at the NCAAs in 2024, and with the level of talent on the roster, excitement is palpable as the season approaches.

While he may not impact much now, Angelo Ferrari drawing eyes

In the midst of conversations surrounding veterans like Brands, Kennedy, and Arnold, freshman Angelo Ferrari stands out as a name to watch. Since joining the team as the top recruit of the incoming class, Ferrari has consistently been recognized for his athleticism and competitive spirit by both coaches and teammates.

Coach Tom Brands noted, “I mean, (he has) things that you could guess that all super talented and driven young athletes, the characteristics that they have and possess, and he’s probably got them to a little bit better degree.” This statement underlines the high expectations for Ferrari within the program.

Although history suggests that Ferrari might consider redshirting to hone his skills, the possibility of him finding a place in the starting lineup remains open. The coaching staff and athletes have not ruled out his entry as they assess the team’s needs throughout the season, making him a potential key player.

Ferrari is ready to make a statement when the time comes, expressing, “If I’m wrestling, then win an NCAA title. Whatever coach Tom and Terry (Brands) say for me to do, I’ll do.”
