It’s been seven long years since I last had the privilege of writing about new music from G-Dragon, a true icon in the world of K-pop. To say that he has been foundational to my own K-pop fandom is an understatement of monumental proportions. His influence spans from his groundbreaking work with Bigbang to his innovative solo projects; G-Dragon is K-pop for me. With an eagerly anticipated album set to drop next month, he has finally made his long-awaited return with the pre-release single Power. And this is where it gets complicated for a K-pop blogger like myself. How do you separate my undeniable bias from an objective assessment of the music itself? This struggle resonates deeply with me, reminiscent of the mixed feelings I had when Infinite made their highly awaited return last year.
Power occupies a similar realm in my musical landscape as that Infinite comeback did. By G-Dragon’s sky-high creative standards, it’s a relatively modest effort. I am holding onto the hope that he’s reserving his masterpiece for the promotion of the full album launch. One notable advantage he possesses is his skill as a composer. Even his less ambitious material manages to feel fundamentally him. Power is a vibrant celebration, rich with pomp and circumstance, heralding the return of a living legend, aided by a brassy beat and a hook that compels you to sing along from the rafters. G-Dragon excels at braggadocio, but what sets him apart is the palpable sense of pathos that lingers beneath all the boasts, giving depth to his artistry. He remains a singular presence in an industry frequently built on archetypes, and that authenticity elevates a song like Power considerably.
I’m not particularly fond of Power‘s repetitive centerpiece, especially when paired with its relentless instrumental backdrop. However, unlike many contemporary K-pop efforts, the groove genuinely feels alive and doesn’t merely resemble a generic cut-and-paste loop from a computer. There’s an abundance of life contained within Power‘s narrowly defined framework, and G-Dragon’s undeniable conviction elevates what could have easily been a fleeting novelty. Like most of his tracks, I have no doubt that it will grow on me significantly over the coming weeks. Above all, it’s simply incredible to finally have him back in the conversation and cultural discourse. Here’s hoping he has another Crooked-level smash waiting just around the corner.
