“Four participants submitted documents for the LRT general director competition,” LRT spokeswoman Miglė Savickaitė told BNS after the deadline for applications.
The documents presented by the applicants will be evaluated by the LRT council next week, on Tuesday.
“After the meeting, the candidates participating in the competition will be publicly announced. We will also inform about the publication of activity program summaries on Tuesday, after the meeting,” said the LRT representative.
The current general director of LRT Monika Garbačiauskaitė-Budrienė and associate professor of Vilnius University Mantas Martišius announced their participation in the competition. The other two candidates are not publicly announced.
At that time, communication specialist Aistis Zabarauskas announced that he would not participate in the competition for the third time. Before that, he competed with the current leader twice, but the contenders got the same number of votes both times, so the competition had to be repeated.
The General Director of LRT is appointed by the LRT Council through a public tender.
The LRT council is formed for six years from 12 persons, well-known figures of society, science and culture. Four members of the Council are appointed at different times by the President and the Seimas, one member is delegated by the Lithuanian Science Council, the Lithuanian Education Council, the Association of Lithuanian Artists and the Lithuanian Bishops’ Conference.
Culture Minister Simonas Kairys has mentioned that if the LRT Council fails to appoint the general director of the national broadcaster LRT for the third time, it should take responsibility and resign.
Until the permanent head of LRT is elected, the broadcaster is headed by M. Garbačiauskaitė-Budrienė.

**Interview with LRT Spokeswoman Miglė Savickaitė on the General Director Competition**
**Editor:** Thank you for joining us today, Miglė. We’ve learned that four participants submitted their documents for the LRT general director competition. Can you tell us more about the process going forward?
**Miglė Savickaitė:** Thank you for having me! Yes, we have received four applications by the deadline. The LRT council will review all submitted documents next Tuesday. After the meeting, we will publicly announce the candidates who are officially entering the competition, along with summaries of their activity programs.
**Editor:** Interesting! We’ve seen a notable lineup so far, including the current general director Monika Garbačiauskaitė-Budrienė and associate professor Mantas Martišius. What can you share about the remaining two candidates?
**Miglė Savickaitė:** At this moment, we cannot disclose the identities of the other two candidates. However, we will provide more information on them during the announcement next week.
**Editor:** It seems that this competition has a history of close calls, especially with Aistis Zabarauskas opting out this time after two previous attempts that ended in ties. What do you think this means for the competition’s dynamics?
**Miglė Savickaitė:** Aistis has shown great commitment to this role over the years, and it’s a significant decision for him to step back. His experience certainly adds a layer of intensity to the competition. Each applicant brings unique perspectives, and we believe this will foster a robust selection process.
**Editor:** Could you explain the role of the LRT Council in appointing the new general director?
**Miglė Savickaitė:** Certainly! The LRT Council is responsible for appointing the General Director through a public tender process. The Council is composed of well-known figures from various sectors, including science and culture, and is tasked with ensuring that the best candidate is chosen to lead LRT effectively.
**Editor:** Thank you, Miglė, for shedding light on this important process. We look forward to the updates next week.
**Miglė Savickaitė:** Thank you! We appreciate your interest and will keep everyone informed as the process unfolds.
