“These conflicts show that democracies must stand together,” European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen told reporters when she came to meet Mr. Biden in the White House together with European Council President Charles Michel. in the palace.
The EU-US summit is taking place against a backdrop of global crises, with Ukraine battling a Russian invasion and Israel preparing for an invasion of the Gaza Strip following a surprise attack by Hamas on October 7.
American and European leaders wanted to present a united front to strengthen their strategic partnership.
J. Biden, who on Thursday, urging Americans to support the 106 billion A US$100bn (€100bn) aid package, including military aid to Ukraine and Israel, directly linked the two conflicts, said the EU and the US “stand together”.
“We have come together to support the brave people of Ukraine who have faced [Vladimiro] Putin’s aggression, Mr. Biden said. “Now we stand together to support Israel after the horrific terrorist attack by Hamas.”
Ch. Michel said the EU and the US were “forming a united front”.
“Today, the world is facing enormous challenges. And today, more than ever, the world needs a strong EU-US alliance to overcome these challenges,” he added.
But EU leaders will also seek assurances that the US will continue to support Ukraine as it continues to fight to repel a Russian invasion launched by President Vladimir Putin in February 2022.
The US is perhaps the largest provider of military aid to Ukraine.
Speaking to journalists on Thursday, Ch. Michel said he was “firmly convinced” that the US president would do everything in his power to ensure aid to Ukraine.
The last EU-US summit took place in Brussels in June 2021.

**Interview with Dr. Emily Roberts, Political Analyst**
**Interviewer:** Thank you for joining us today, Dr. Roberts. The recent EU-US summit featured strong statements about unity among democracies, particularly from European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. What do you think is the significance of her remark that “democracies must stand together”?
**Dr. Roberts:** Thank you for having me. Von der Leyen’s statement underscores the urgent need for democratic nations to unify in the face of global threats. We are witnessing increased aggression from authoritarian regimes, notably the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine and Hezbollah’s offensive actions in the Middle East. These situations serve as a reminder that democratic governments need to support one another both politically and militarily to safeguard democratic values and stability.
**Interviewer:** The summit came at a pivotal moment with the crises in Ukraine and Israel. How do you believe these situations are influencing the discussions between the US and EU leaders?
**Dr. Roberts:** Absolutely. The overlapping crises have created a powerful context for the summit. Leaders are keenly aware that a divided stance could embolden adversaries. By advocating for a robust military aid package, as President Biden has done, they’re not only addressing immediate needs but also sending a strong message that they will not waver in their commitment to allied nations.
**Interviewer:** Biden’s proposed aid package is quite substantial. How might this impact American public opinion toward overseas military assistance?
**Dr. Roberts:** That’s a great question. While there’s traditionally been bipartisan support for aiding Ukraine, public sentiment can be more mixed when it comes to military interventions in Middle Eastern conflicts. This package’s success will depend on effective communication from leadership highlighting the strategic importance of these alliances—essentially framing it as an investment in global peace and democracy, rather than mere foreign spending.
**Interviewer:** do you think we will see more integrated responses from the US and EU in the future?
**Dr. Roberts:** It’s quite likely. The current geopolitical landscape has shown that isolated actions can lead to increased instability. As these crises unfold, we can expect more coordinated diplomatic and military strategies. The partnership between the US and EU is fundamental in crafting a response that not only tackles immediate threats but also prevents future conflicts.
**Interviewer:** Thank you for your insights, Dr. Roberts. It’s always enlightening to unpack these complex issues with you.
**Dr. Roberts:** Thank you for having me! It’s essential to keep these discussions alive as the global situation continues to evolve.
