La Liga has formally requested that the highly anticipated match between Valencia and Real Madrid be postponed in light of severe flash flooding and extreme weather conditions impacting the region, which have wreaked havoc on local communities.
The league has approached the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) to arrange for a rescheduling of this important fixture, alongside Villarreal’s match against Rayo Vallecano, both of which were originally slated for Saturday, November 2.
In addition, La Liga is advocating for the postponement of three second division matches across the region: the Sunday confrontations between Castellon and Racing Ferrol, as well as Huesca’s venture to Eldense, and the Monday night clash involving Valencia-based Levante and Malaga.
Tragically, local Valencian government officials reported on Wednesday evening that the recent torrential rains have resulted in the deaths of 92 individuals due to flash floods, with many others still unaccounted for, deepening the crisis for residents.
On the same day, the RFEF had already announced the postponement of the Copa del Rey match between Valencia and Parla Escuela, which was scheduled to take place in Parla, approximately 15 miles from Madrid, certainly adding to the disruption caused by the weather.
Currently, Valencia is under a red alert weather warning, which signifies extreme or unusual weather events; this is the most severe alert issued by weather authorities. Additionally, yellow warnings for lower-risk weather conditions are also in effect across other parts of Spain, underscoring the widespread impact of the storm.
In a move to assist those affected, Valencia’s renowned Mestalla stadium has been designated as an emergency aid station, where volunteers are gathering food and essential items to support the victims of the devastating flooding.
Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric expressed his solidarity and concern for those impacted by the severe weather, stating on Wednesday: “Lots of love and strength to all the people of Valencia and the other provinces affected by the storm,” showcasing the compassion within the football community.
As the crisis unfolds, Valencia is struggling at the bottom of La Liga, having secured only a single victory from their first 11 matches this season, while Real Madrid stands in a promising second place, lagging six points behind league leaders Barcelona.
