At least 64 people dead and dozens missing are the figures handled by the Spanish authorities, after the floods that were recorded since October 29 in the province of Valencia due to the passage of the Isolated Depression at High Levels (DANA).

Some photos and videos that have been spread on social networks show how the accumulation of water in the streets covers a large part of the vehicles. Likewise, the strong currents have wreaked havoc in localities of the city.

One of the videos that went viral on social network X shows a group of elderly people inside a care center flooded by rainfall.

The King of Spain, Felipe VI, held a press conference in which he expressed his concern about the events and his “sadness” for the deceased.

“There has been enormous destruction of infrastructure and material assets. There are still many difficulties in accessing some locations,” commented the king.

The president of the Valencian Generalitat, Carlos Arturo Mazón Guixot, confirmed that the authorities had found several bodies in the flooded areas. However, he did not reveal more details until the victims’ families are informed.

They request help to locate the missing

Relatives of people who have been missing since October 29 have informed the media that they are requesting help from the authorities to find their relatives.

“The last time I spoke to my son was last night, he told me that the water reached his waist and he hasn’t answered me again,” said a woman in an interview with the EFE news agency. He indicated that his son is Colombian and was working in Benetússer.

The father of another of the missing said that he has tried to contact his son, who at the time of the heavy rains was in Alfafar, where another of his daughters and his two grandchildren also live.

“I am trying to call him but there is no communication with him, and it is not possible either with the Police or with the Alfafar City Council,” he assured.

Following these events, the European Union (EU) activated the Copernicus satellite system to help coordinate rescue teams facing the effects of DANA in the southeast of Spain.

“Europe is ready to help. What we are seeing is devastating. Entire towns are covered in mud, people are seeking shelter in trees and cars have been swept away by the fury of the waters,” said the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, on Wednesday, October 30, who offered Spain to activate the EU civil protection mechanism, under which the aid that other EU countries can provide is covered.

For their part, the president of the European Council, Charles Michel, and the president of Parliament, Roberta Metsola, agreed that the continent is willing to help the country and face the consequences of the floods.
