Night has barely covered the Maurepas district in Rennes when the shutters of the surrounding buildings are all closed on Monday October 28. The residents hide in an unusual silence. At the foot of the fifteen-story bars built in the 1960s, several CRS82 vans. Officials from this company specializing in maintaining order were urgently deployed to Maurepas, currently in the grip of a turf war between drug traffickers. “This police presence should reassure the population who want to live in peace. Safety is at the heart of our priorities”insists Amaury de Saint-Quentin, prefect of Brittany, visiting the neighborhood at the end of the evening. In office for only a few hours, he was asked by Bruno Retailleau, the Minister of the Interior, to make the « guerre » to “drug scum who control this neighborhood.”
Frequently described as a “city where life is good”, Rennes has not escaped the explosion of violence orchestrated by drug traffickers. The last weekend of October, Maurepas was the epicenter of an unprecedented wave in the Breton capital. It all began on Saturday October 26 in the morning when bursts of gunfire were heard. According to the Rennes public prosecutor’s office, a group of hooded men, one of whom is carrying a submachine gun type weapon, wanders between the towers. The RAID intervenes to stop what looks like a new clash between rival gangs vying for a deal point.
Later in the evening, a 29-year-old man left the neighborhood driving his car. In the back seat, his 5-year-old son. According to the first elements of the investigation, the driver, known to the police, felt threatened while he was driving towards Vezin-le-Coquet, in the suburbs of Rennes, to “take shelter” his child with the latter’s mother and hide there. On the road, the man notices that a vehicle is following him. On board, several men, at least one of whom is armed. A chase then begins to Pacé, a peaceful and wealthy town in the Rennes metropolitan area. Gunshots ring out. The child was hit twice in the head. The attackers flee. Emergency services intervene and take the victim to hospital. The boy underwent surgery twice. His vital prognosis was still in jeopardy Monday evening, according to the prefecture.
