The Minister of Economy and Finance, Nadia Fattah Al-Alawi, revealed the latest developments in pension systems reform and the government’s measures to improve the situation of retirees.
During her speech in the oral questions session in the House of Representatives, Al-Alawi stated that the economic situation of retirees is at the center of the government’s attention, and that the latter has opened the door to social dialogue with various partners to engage in these workshops that have been delayed for years.
The Minister of Finance acknowledged that retirement systems and funds suffer from several deficiencies, as this issue must be reconsidered by a comprehensive reform of these social workshops, noting that the current government is determined to reform these workshops that concern retirees along with all the partners with whom it is in dialogue.
In this context, the government official reviewed the measures that were taken within the framework of reforming retirement systems, where pensions were increased by 5 percent for retirees enrolled in the National Social Security Fund, in addition to the 1,300-day law that was approved in the House of Councilors, as well as measures Social support that retirees also benefit from.
Nadia Fattah Al-Alawi explained that during the April round of social dialogue, three pillars were agreed upon to reform the retirement system, the most important of which are the public and private poles, given that they cannot be integrated due to the differences between them, as well as defining the mechanisms for transitioning to a new system while preserving rights and gains, in addition to strengthening Governance of pension systems.
The same speaker concluded that only half of the working people, or about 10 million, benefit from retirement systems, compared to 5 million who do not have access to retirement, stressing the need to find solutions to ensure that the entire working class benefits from this right.
