Supreme Court Bar: President, General Secretary elected from rival groups

The Supreme Court Annuals of the Bar Association Elections 2024 In the posts of President and General Secretary, candidates of traditional rivals have been successful.

Supreme Court Bar Association elections were held in all cities of the country on Tuesday in which members of the Supreme Court Bar exercised their right to vote.

After the counting process was completed by the Supreme Court Bar Election Committee, Asma Jahangir i.e. (Independent Group) took the field, whose candidate Mian Rauf Atta was elected President Supreme Court Bar Association with 1270 votes.

Against him, Munir Kakar of Hamid Khan (Professional Group) stood second with 1155 votes.

Salman Mansoor of the Professional Group was elected secretary while Malik Zahid of the Independent Group was defeated for the post.

According to the inconclusive results, Mian Rauf Atta of the Independent Group won from nine cities including Lahore, Multan, Peshawar, Bahawalpur, while the Professional Group could only win from Karachi and Quetta.

Out of the total 17 posts, the independent group has an edge in 14 posts while the candidates of the professional group have an edge in three posts.

The newly elected President Mian Rauf belongs to Quetta. He studied law there and joined the legal profession.

He has also been elected member Balochistan times. He is known as a professional lawyer at the Quetta Bar.

The newly elected president of the Independent Group, Mian Rauf Atta, while talking to the media after the success, said that ‘all the professionals Lawyers Thank you, there will be no compromise on the self-respect of the black coat, our group has always tried to uphold the constitution and law, we will continue to fight for the constitution and law in the future.

Federal Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar congratulated the newly elected officials of the Independent Group.

In his statement, he said that interference in institutions will not be tolerated, Parliament is supreme and there will be no compromise on the dignity of judiciary.

Sulaiman Mansoor, the newly elected secretary of the professional group, said in a conversation with the representatives of the media that ‘I will work for the improvement of the justice system, the profession of lawyers and the lawyers. Against whom people stand every day, these amendments are against the people, these amendments are equivalent to killing the justice system.

He further said that ‘lawyers are opponents before the elections, after the elections the lawyers work as an elected body, we will all work together on a common agenda.’

According to the formula decided by the Supreme Court Bar, the presidential candidate was to be elected from Balochistan. Therefore, the independent and professional groups fielded presidential candidates from Quetta, while both the candidates for the post of secretary, Malik Zahid and Sulaiman Mansoor, are from Lahore.

The polling process in the Supreme Court Bar elections continued uninterrupted from 9 am to 5 pm.

The Supreme Court Bar has more than 4,000 members across the country who have exercised their right to vote.

Effects of elections on lawyers movement

Hamid Khan, head of the Professional Group, campaigned against the 26th Amendment during the election campaign.

He had said several times during his speech at the lawyers’ convention that these Supreme Court bar elections will have a profound impact on the lawyers’ movement against judicial reforms.
