On January 1, 2025, the Motor Vehicle Tax Act will enter into force in Estonia. The Transport Board and the Tax and Customs Board invite people to check the necessary data in the traffic register and contact details in the e-service of the Tax and Customs Board (MTA) before the tax comes into force.
When the motor vehicle tax law was passed, a so-called annual tax was established in Estonia, which will be collected by the MTA, and a registration fee, which will be collected by the Transport Agency.
Owners of taxable motor vehicles start paying the annual tax every year for vehicles registered in the traffic register. The Transport Board submits to the MTA the basic data necessary for the calculation and collection of the annual tax, including the general data of the motor vehicle owner and responsible user, data for identifying the motor vehicle and technical data of the motor vehicle. Read which categories of vehicles the tax applies to on the MTA website.
The registration fee is paid before the first registration of passenger cars and vans in the traffic register, i.e. the prerequisite for the registration entry is the payment of the registration fee. The registration fee must also be paid on the first change of ownership of vehicles already registered in the Estonian traffic register, provided that no registration fee has been paid for this vehicle before.
What must vehicle owners do before the end of 2024?
- Check the data of your vehicle in the traffic register so that the taxes are calculated based on the correct data. In case the data is not correct, be sure to inform the Transpordiamet at the e-mail address [email protected].
- Check your contact information in the MTA e-environment. The correct contact information helps to issue a tax notice to the right person, who can get acquainted with the size of the tax liability, the calculation process and pay it on time in the new year.
The motor vehicle tax calculator has been completed in cooperation between the Transport Board and the MTA. With this, every vehicle owner can calculate the annual tax and registration fee for his vehicle based on the registration plate or the vehicle’s technical data. The calculator can be found both on the MTA website and in the e-service of the Transport Board. Due to high traffic, the calculator may be slower than usual at times. If this happens, it’s worth trying again after a while.
Frequently asked questions about the registration fee can be found on the website of the Transport Board and about motor vehicle tax on the website of the MTA.
