The Cuban government announced its decision to investigate and prosecute those who spread false news about the breaking of the curtains at the San Antonio del Sur dam, after the passage of Hurricane Oscar.
In a note published in the official newspaper Granmareported the National Defense Council advanced the investigation and subsequent prosecution of the authors of the false news about the breaking of the curtains at the San Antonio del Sur dam.
They allege that the objective was to “create panic in a population also psychologically affected after the passage of Hurricane Oscar.”
“People without the slightest modesty circulated this Friday, through social networks, the misleading rumor about an alleged break in the curtain of the Los Asientos dam, in this Guantanamo municipality,” they point out in the text.
Likewise, they consider that the information has “obvious sinister purposes” and that it caused “logical shocks in a population that is experiencing days of anguish, derived from the flooding that its municipal seat suffered at the beginning of this week.”
Los Asientos Dam in optimal conditions; Cuba denies rumors of breakup
On this topic, Yanet Marzo Manuel, general director of the Hydraulic Use Company in Guantánamo, confirmed to the aforementioned media that the dam has “no flaws in any element of its infrastructure, including the curtain, the spillway and the basin.”
In addition, he described the recorded rains as “normal” and recalled that the reservoir has a capacity to store 17.5 million cubic meters of water.
“The Los Asientos dam is currently pouring 21.7 cubic meters per second, which, like the downpours that have fed it in recent hours, are normal and do not imply any danger of flooding,” said the official.
Regarding the government’s announcement, many readers of the state media supported the decision to prosecute the authors of the fake news.
“Let them put all the investigative channels on it and when they find those responsible, let them publish it with photos on social networks, where the false news appeared,” asked a user identified as Eddy.
“I believe that the decision is very timely and this process must be carried out with all speed and transparency, so that the entire population appreciates that there is no impunity for crime, whatever type it may be,” Roberto wrote.
