In the Italy of spies and spies, the numbers in the dossier now speak for themselves. And the victims of illegal intrusions into databases who have ended up in the crosshairs of state servants discovered working against the state exceed one million. From the wormhole of Striano & Co to the Antimafia, passing through the banking system of Bari, up to the team of hackers in Milan, the common thread is the obsession with centre-right politicians, the shadow of the secret services, the presence of instigators and accomplices yet to be identified and the late seizure of the suspects’ devices. In the background the specter of that Fiore team, not yet identified, which in Rome has set up a market for confidential information that is more flourishing than the Milanese one.

In the dossier of the financier Pasquale Striano, investigated together with the former prosecutor Antonio Laudati and three journalists from Domani, the prosecutor of Perugia, Raffaele Cantone, spoke of monstrous numbers: «From 1 January 2019 to 24 November 2022, Striano consulted 4,124 SOS, out of 1,531 natural persons and 74 legal persons, 1,123 persons on the “Serpico” database and 1,947 searches on the Sdi database. But the most worrying element is that he downloaded 33,528 files from the database of the National Anti-Mafia Directorate.” This at least in the first phase of the investigation, because the investigations allowed the investigators to identify as many as 230 thousand confidential files that Striano exfiltrated from the systems. There is no trace of those documents, it is not known what happened to them, unlike the several hundred out of many government representatives that the financier sent to his journalist friends and which became exclusive to throw mud on his political opponent. «The most important thing would be to know if there is a common thread that binds, perhaps in the unawareness of the minor actors, all these, and many others, information collections, illegitimate intrusions, chases, stalking, films, photographs, recordings, unauthorized and not justified by nothing legal and to protect the public interest”, said the Minister of Defense, Guido Crosetto, the one who opened Pandora’s box of the Anti-Mafia and who is now asking to find out if there could be a link with the hackers of Milan.
The certainty is that there are multiple points of contact in the case of the spy banker, Vincenzo Coviello who, weeks ago, ended up in the storm for having carried out almost 8 thousand illicit accesses to the current accounts of 3,500 Banca Intesa customers. Among those spied on, Crosetto, as well as Giorgia and Arianna Meloni. And even Giovanni Melillo, the chief prosecutor of the DNA who upon his arrival had tightened his grip on Striano’s spy team. Furthermore, the Bari prosecutors are convinced that Coviello is not an official burdened by the mania of controlling anyone, so much so that they are reconstructing the banker’s contacts and following the trail of a connection between financiers between Rome and Bari with links to foreign 007s. Deviated services and moles that the Milan hackers themselves turned to, to obtain useful material to create dossiers, real or falsified, and satisfy the customer who paid good money. And little by little they put everything into a mega archive. The computer scientist who had created the program capable of managing the database, Nunzio Calamucci, refers to a “hard disk containing eight hundred thousand SDIs”, therefore over 800 thousand people spied on, without counting the confidential files, even covered by state secrecy and stolen to intelligence, which the prosecutors have so far counted, around 109 thousand. The Prosecutor’s Office is also considering a letter rogatory in England, because in London there was a sort of hacker center led by a woman to whom the Milanese turned. And the same English capital appears in the Perugia documents, with Striano sending documentation and addresses to a contact of his who would send “the boys” to check.
