Malta announced on Friday that a new round of Ukraine peace talks will be held on the Mediterranean island on October 28-29. Similar meetings were held in Jeddah and Copenhagen earlier this year.
“We discussed the next round of negotiations on the peace formula in Malta,” stated V. Zelensky after the conversation with RT Erdogan.
“Turkey will participate, adding its authoritative voice and position,” V. Zelenskis said.
Russia should not take part in these talks, which Zelensky hopes will help rally support for his own peace plan.
Similar negotiations were held in Copenhagen in June, and in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, in August.
Representatives from around 40 countries, including China, India, the United States and Ukraine, attended the summit in Saudi Arabia, which did not reach a final declaration.
Both Russia and Ukraine are bracing for a grueling winter ahead, with Ukraine warning of renewed strikes on its energy infrastructure and Russia trying to stifle a Ukrainian counterattack.
Turkey has offered to mediate between the two warring sides and helped broker an agreement last July that allowed grain to be safely exported across the Black Sea.
Since then, Turkey has been in talks with both sides to renew the deal, which collapsed after Russia decided to pull out this year.
