A spokeswoman said the “joke” about Puerto Rico did not reflect the candidate’s opinion. Trump defended himself against accusations of fascism at a rally in the US state of Georgia: “I’m not a Nazi, I’m the opposite of a Nazi,” he said on Monday in Atlanta.
A few days ago, an interview with Trump’s former chief of staff caused a sensation in the USA: The Republican was a politician who “meets the general definition of fascists,” Trump’s former chief of staff John Kelly told the New York Times. Kelly also confirmed earlier reports that Trump had made positive comments about Adolf Hitler on several occasions.
On Sunday evening, a comedian made a racist comment at a Trump campaign rally in New York’s Madison Square Garden. Tony Hinchcliffe said Puerto Rico is an “island of trash.” Puerto Rico in the Caribbean is the largest foreign territory of the USA. At the same time, Hinchcliffe said of Latinos that they loved “making babies.” At the event in front of thousands of fanatical Trump supporters, other speakers made racist comments about Latinos and African Americans.
At Trump’s rally on Sunday evening in New York’s Madison Square Garden, comedian Tony Hinchcliffe said that Puerto Rico was an “island of garbage.” At the same time, he said of Latinos that they loved “making babies.” At the event in front of thousands of fanatical Trump supporters, other speakers made racist comments about Latinos and African Americans.
Hinchcliffe was surprised at the heavy criticism of his statements: His critics apparently had no sense of humor, he wrote in an online service – which Trump’s eldest son Donald Trump Junior liked, which is why he shared the post.
Democratic candidate Kamala Harris accused Trump of being fixated on “dividing our country.” Puerto Rico in the Caribbean is the largest foreign territory of the USA. With the rally in New York, Trump once again demonstrated that he is fixated on his grudges and himself – and on dividing the USA. “And that’s not something that’s going to strengthen the American family, the American worker,” Harris said. The people of Puerto Rico “deserve a president who sees and promotes their strengths,” she had previously said.
Puerto Rican singer Ricky Martin shared Hinchcliffe’s comments and Harris’ reaction on the online service Instagram with his 18.6 million followers. “That’s what they think about us,” he wrote and: “Vote for Kamala Harris.”
The residents of Puerto Rico are not allowed to vote in the presidential election on November 5th, but according to the Pew Research Center, there are around six million native Puerto Ricans in the USA who have the right to vote.
Pennsylvania Democratic Senator John Fetterman noted that his state is home to nearly half a million people of Puerto Rican descent, three-quarters of whom have the right to vote. These people are important, he wrote on the online service X and “not the punch line of a desperate joke.”
Pennsylvania in the northeast of the USA is one of the particularly hotly contested US states. Harris and Trump are neck and neck in the polls. It is the closest race for the White House in recent United States history. Outgoing US President Joe Biden called the rally in Madison Square Garden “embarrassing” and not worthy of a former president.
