C’is information that comes at a bad time during the period of examination of the social security financing bill (PLFSS), where hospital budgets are scrutinized to check that they are not spending too much public money. According to our information, the Georges-Pompidou European Hospital (Paris, 15e), supposed to be a flagship of French hospitalization, got its feet wet regarding the management of its purchases of medical equipment.
During a recent office of the establishment’s Medical Commission, the doctors learned of this astonishing news, accompanied by a figure which was communicated to them discreetly by management. “An excess of unsuitable storage” and “unsuitable orders in certain specialties lead to more than two million euros of financial loss at the level of [l’]establishment,” according to a document that The Point was able to consult.
The existence of errors in the logistics circuit of the establishment and its consequences, particularly in the orthopedics department, had already been mentioned in the July 17, 2024 edition of the weekly The Chained Duck. But we did not know, at the time, the extent of the real financial losses, nor especially the perishable nature of certain products concerned.
Operating field for the block, forceps for operations, prostheses…
“What happened was that the purchasing and logistics departments did literally anything. There are boxes and boxes of equipment piling up in the hallways for weeks. They contain operating fields for the operating room, covers to protect the operating microscopes, forceps for operations, gowns, gloves, prostheses. But some of its materials are reaching their expiration date. The doctors come to do their shopping… It’s an incredible waste. We have never seen such a mess,” exclaims a great surgeon. These are not medicines, which are not affected by this purchasing channel. Requested by The Point, the AP-HP management did not give a response.
In reality, for a reason that no one can explain at the moment, the purchasing department of the Georges-Pompidou hospital, which purchased medical equipment worth 3.5 million euros in 2023, suddenly decided to make place its orders at 5.7 million euros in 2024, or 2.2 million euros more in consumables… The very ones that pile up in the corridors and find themselves unusable.

“However, we have not increased our medical activity, which could have justified these increases in orders. It’s just a huge mistake. This affects all specialties: urology, visceral surgery, ENT. Really, this mismanagement comes at a bad time. Everyone will still think that public money is poorly managed. We are told that it is the fault of the logisticians, but don’t they have a good back? » adds another hospital practitioner from the HEGP and member of the establishment Medical Commission.
Management had already launched an audit of the hospital pharmacy in 2023. It now finds itself up against the wall. Also, an “external audit” was entrusted to a company outside the AP-HP to understand what went wrong.
