Wounds in a sunny world
At the beginning of September, LNDM together with its partners evacuated Marija Prymačenko’s collection of 100 works to Lithuania. Before transportation, specialists carefully inspected the works and assessed their condition.

“The 51 pieces were sported and framed with Plexiglas. 32 pieces – only fit, attached to a low-quality cardboard base. 17 particularly damaged works were covered with different paper. The layer of their original paint has lifted from the base, is crumbling or fragmented, there are many tears at the edges”, says Eglė Piščikaitė, restorer of works of art on paper in the expert qualification category of LNDM Pranas Gudynas Restoration Center.

The restorers soon realized that some of these war refugees would need urgent help and exceptional attention, but first they all had to be brought safely to Lithuania. The works were divided into groups according to condition and prepared for safe transport, special transport boxes were made for them. The framed works are placed vertically, each separated by a cushioning spacer. Damaged works are packed in tissue paper folders and transported horizontally in a separate box. Properly packed works of M. Prymachenko were safely and successfully brought to Lithuania by land transport from Lviv.
Restoration will take time, skill and money
During the restoration, the original state of the work of art is restored, fragments damaged by time, environment or man. This healing and healing process requires special attention, skill and time.

“In order to prepare an accurate program of conservation and restoration works of M. Prymachenko’s works, technological studies of the works must first be carried out. Using modern equipment and advanced research methods – FTIR spectral, X-ray fluorescence and microchemical analysis – the binding material of author’s paints and the pigments used by the author are identified. A morphological analysis of the paper fiber is performed, and its acidity is measured. The works are photographed in diffused visible and ultraviolet light, scanned in the infrared spectrum,” says Dr. Dr. Jūratė Senvaitienė.

“After assessing the nature of the damage to M. Prymachenko’s works and the extremely unstable technique of performing the works – gouache painting – it can be predicted that complex, time-consuming, stressful and costly restoration processes await,” Dr. explains the situation. J. Senvaitiene.
M. Prymačenko’s works are restored by Eglė Piščikaitė, Paulius Zovė, Rytė Šimaitė, Jurga Blažytė-Denapienė, Janita Petrauskienė, Dalia Jonynaitė.
LNDM and the charitable foundation “Creative heritage of the Maria Prymachenko family” signed a contract for the restoration of works currently in LNDM. The works have already been digitized in the LNDM Lithuanian Museum Information, Digitization and LIMIS Center.
Maria Prymachenko’s works are a national legend of Ukraine
October 15 60 works from the collection of 100 works evacuated from the Zaporizhia Regional Art Museum are exhibited at the exhibition of M. Prymachenko’s work “I give you sunny art” opened at the Vytautas Kasiulis Art Museum of LNDM. The rest of M. Prymachenko’s works are supervised by restorers.

This is the first presentation of such an artist in Lithuania.
“The visionary work of the artist has become a legend and a recognizable symbol of Ukrainian culture. The self-taught folk artist is one of the country’s favorite artists. Her image adorns the country’s banknotes, and her works are illustrated in fairy-tale books, stamps, and cartoons. As many as sixteen memory institutions of Ukraine keep collections of M. Prymachenko’s works, exhibitions of her work are held all over the world”, says one of the curators of the exhibition, the director of the Vytautas Kasiulis Art Museum of LNDM, dr. Ilona Mažeikiene.
Currently, the works being restored will only be visible during special events at the LNDM Pranas Gudyna Restoration Center, and in 2025. in the spring – at the exhibition at LNDM Pranas Domšaitis gallery.
