Russia claims to have captured two new small towns in Ukraine

According to the Russian Defense Ministry, the Russian forces have taken control of Selydove, which had 20,000 inhabitants before the war.

Hirnyk, which is 12 kilometers from Selydove, is also now, according to the ministry, in Russian hands. 10,000 people lived there before the war.

Earlier on Tuesday, it was announced that the villages of Bogojavlenka and Katerinivka had been captured.

Advances quickly

The information has not been independently confirmed, but data from open sources, such as the Ukrainian Deep State, indicate that it is now the fastest Russian advance in over a year.

At the same time, information from Russian military bloggers indicates that the Russian forces are now in the process of breaking through the front in several other places in the south of Donbas, and that they are in the process of encircling Kurakhove and preparing an attack on the city of Pokrovsk.

Still larger areas

The AFP news agency has analyzed data from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) which shows that during the first 27 days of October, the Russian forces took control of at least 478 new square kilometers in eastern Ukraine.

Russia thus has to go all the way back to March 2022 to note greater progress on the battlefield.

In August, Russian forces took control of 477 new square kilometers in eastern Ukraine, and in September they captured another 459 square kilometers.

The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) is headquartered in Washington and is partially funded by the US arms industry.
