Speaking on the program “Now Together” of the OPEN television station, Mr. Kasselakis emphasized that he does not intend to proceed with prosecutions against executives who have criticized him, underlining that “the base does not forget” and if the base decides to keep these individuals in front line, will fully respect this decision.

Referring to the conference process, Mr. Kasselakis emphasized: “The nominations are announced only at the conference and we still do not know where the conference will take place. The congressional elections should take place until then. The conference must be held. As you know there is a new command post in the daily life of the party and it has to decide the details. It does not honor the official opposition party, two months after the removal of confidence in my person, not to have a closed space and what process it has followed. We’re going to a bouzouki shop that hasn’t been working for four years, it doesn’t honor us.” Referring to possible adjournments or a “closed conference”, he warned that any undemocratic process would provoke a backlash from the grassroots, as stipulated by the constitution.

Speaking about the political model he is seeking, Mr. Kasselakis emphasized the need for a new way of practicing politics, stating: “The biggest risk the Greek citizen can take is to choose the same people to change something. The old policy has failed. We vote every four years and the pathogens don’t change, we need a new policy model.” He referred to the importance of immediacy and feedback with the public, noting the participation of 7,000 citizens in an online debate, in which topics such as the crisis and Greek-Turkish relations were developed.

Regarding the opinion poll image of SYRIZA and the party’s challenges, Mr. Kasselakis said: “There will be radical changes and the percentages will change quite quickly. The biggest change that needs to be made is for the party to open up to society. We were shocked by the big difference between ND and SYRIZA in 2023. We thought that 31% is the starting point and in the end we fell a lot in the percentages”. He proposed as a solution the strengthening of society’s participation in the decision-making process of SYRIZA, through open procedures where citizens can choose MPs and MEPs, while underlining that “no one will automatically be a candidate again”.

Commenting on the party’s structure, he stressed the need for strict provisions on incompatibilities, adding: “The Central Committee must have financial incompatibilities with the party. It is not possible to have converts and secondees. We will enable society to feel that it has a party that listens to it and that the voice of the citizens is not lost.” He stated that in many cases coordinators of organizations prevent the local bases from expressing themselves, which undermines participation and democracy within the party.

Referring to the criticism he receives from SYRIZA officials, he said that the 2022 central committee has people who have “spoken in a vulgar way” towards him, while adding: “If the base chooses to stay in the front line those who have spoken badly to me , I will totally respect that. This is democracy. In SYRIZA we need democracy”.

In conclusion, Mr. Kasselakis spoke about his personal path and his support for the vision of SYRIZA, stating that he remains committed to the goal of change. “The change started by Alexis Tsipras in 2022, with the ‘take SYRIZA into your hands’ and it was not completed”, he underlined, adding that if he betrays the base, only then will he have regrets.
