The incredible outcome of the NFL match between Washington and Chicago could have an impact on the next American presidential election. And that doesn’t bode well for Donald Trump.
You may have seen this crazy action in the NFL. A pass of more than 60 yards sent by quarterback Jayden Daniels, and caught by one of his receivers, to give Washington victory against Chicago (18-15) at the last second. Well imagine that this almost miraculous outcome, which only happens once or twice per season in the NFL, could have influenced the next American presidential election.
Americans are capable of finding statistics for anything and everything. And they managed to detect a correlation between the result of the Washington team’s last home game before a presidential election, and the result of the election in question. This is what is called “the Redskins Rule”: when Washington wins its last home game, the party in power retains the presidency; when Washington loses, the White House changes color, going from Democrats to Republicans, or vice versa.
Good sign for Kamala Harris?
The Redskins joined the American federal capital in 1937, from Boston. Between 1940 and 2000, every four years, the Redskins Rule was verified every time, more than 15 times in a row. But it was precisely from 2000 that everything went a little wrong, with the complicated aspect of the American electoral system (the winner of the popular vote is not always the winner of the election).
Since 2012, and the re-election of Barack Obama despite the defeat of the Redskins a few days earlier against the Carolina Panthers, the Redskins Rule remains on three failures. We can also recall that the Washington team changed its name in 2020 (the term Redskins was considered offensive), to become the Commanders in 2022.
To summarize, if the Redskins Rule were to apply to this election, the victory of the Washington franchise would be a good sign for the Democrats, and would lead to a victory for Kamala Harris over Donald Trump. If we rely on this Commanders game against the Bears, it should come down to nothing at all…
