Opposition alliance demands the release of Biagio Pilieri detained two months ago

Caracas, Oct 28 (EFE).- The main opposition alliance in Venezuela – the Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD) – demanded this Monday the release of its collaborator Biagio Pilieri, who was “unjustly” detained two months ago, after participating in a protest against the controversial re-election of President Nicolás Maduro in the July 28 elections.

Through X, the coalition also asked for respect for the rights and constitutional guarantees of the former deputy, national coordinator of the Convergencia political party.

«Doing politics is not a crime and we should not get used to it. Freedom for our comrade Biagio and for all political prisoners,” the PUD expressed on the social network.

Convergencia also demanded the freedom of its coordinator, whose “unwavering commitment to a free and fair Venezuela does not deserve to be silenced,” as well as that of “all political prisoners.”

“Today more than ever we remain united in the fight for his rights and for the values that he defends: justice, democracy and freedom,” the party added.

Pilieri was arrested on August 28 after participating in a protest called by the PUD, in rejection of the ruling of the Electoral Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ) that validated Maduro’s controversial re-election in the presidential elections, as denounced by opponents at the time.

Anti-Chavismo indicated that the former deputy was captured after two vehicles and two motorcycles allegedly chased him through Caracas.

One day after the arrest, Convergencia reported that officials from the Bolivarian Intelligence Service (Sebin) raided Pilieri’s residence, in the state of Yaracuy (west).

According to the Human Rights Committee of Vente Venezuela (VV), 161 leaders and activists are detained, the vast majority of them collaborators with the anti-Chavista alliance.
